  • 1. Can I get spotlight to stop searching cd?
I'd like to be able to use spotlight more often, but unfortunately, seemingly at random, spotlight will spin up my cd before displaying results, both slowing the obtaining of results, and making a noise while the disc then spins on idle before eventually going silent again. Ideally I'd like to be able to get spotlight to ignore my cd - one of my math programs needs it to run and so it pretty much has to be in the drive all the time. I have tried adding my CD to the spotlight "privacy" section in preferences, but i can't seem to drag the cd onto it - dragging it out of the finder made it disappear from finder, and dragging it off the desktop does nothing at all. I'm stumped. Is this at all possible?
  • 2. Go --> Network
We have 3 Macs running 10.4. On each of them, when we attempt to access our office network through the Go pull-down menu, the appropriate window opens and then closes immediately. However, when we open a folder and use the Network icon in the Sidebar, our various Macs show up just fine. This did not happen prior to 10.4. Hope I am expressing this clearly. Any ideas?
  • 3. sync iPod on two Macs
I have a TiBook & a G4. My music library is on the G4, on the TiBook I have my Podcasts. So I want to sync my iPod with both some playlists from the G4 and the Podscasts from the TiBook. When I try to do this, everything seems to run fine - at first. When I sync, say, 3 playlists from the G4 to the iPod manually, it starts syncing all to the iPod which I synced automatically with the Podcast from the TiBook. But after 200 songs or so, the G4 freezes. The only thing that helps is pressing the reset button. The sync went well so far, though. I reset the iPod completely and tried the whole thing several times - but to no prevail. Any hints appreciated! Cheers, Jens

Disk saved

After I installed Leopard I got a warning that a volume on my second
internal disk couldn't be repaired and was made available with "limited
functionality" (so I could copy the files).
Indeed on Panther and Tiger I was unable to mount the disk using Disk Utility.
So Leopard saved this disk's files for me.
I did have backups, but still, great new feature!

I hadn't heard of that yet. Cool beans!

1.Strange network to local disk saving corruption

Hello everyone!

I've researched this for the past several days, but I've been unable
to find reports of this in the past.

I work in an animation company, and we're in the middle of production
of a couple new shows. We've never had any problems in this area in
the past, so I'm a little baffled as to why it's happening now. We're
a mainly PC company, with our file servers all running Windows 2003
Server on Dell servers. Our production people are all on Macs, using
both iMac G5's and Intel iMacs, all running 10.4.9 with Office 2004,
updated to 11.3.4.

The problem is working with Excel documents that are saved to the
server. The problem we're seeing is that when we open an Excel file
from the Mac, then do a Save As and save the file locally to the
computer, once you close the file, go to the copy you saved locally,
and try to open it. It doesn't open. It flashes like it's trying to
open it, but nothing happens. I've discovered the problem is that the
file has somehow become corrupted in the saving process, because if I
send the file to a PC and open it in Excel (and I've used both 2003
and 2007 to open it), it says the file was corrupted, and asks if I
want to try to recover it. It recovers the data only, and loses all
formating and formulas. When compared side by side, the file info
indicates the file on the server is identical, other than modified
date, to the file stored locally. They're the exact same size,
everything.

There's no problem saving the file back to the server, or doing a Save
As to another folder on the server. The same is true when the file is
local. The problem only occurs when the file is saved on the server,
and we try to do a Save As to the local machine. I've been able to
replicate this on several machines. I've tried creating a fresh user
and testing this, and it worked fine the FIRST time I did it. It
saved it locally fine, and reopened without any problems, but when I
tried it a second time, it failed like before.

All computers are connecting to the Windows server using SMB. I
haven't tested using AFP, because it's just not an option for us (I've
made a concerted effort to get everyone to switch to using SMB).

I've heard of problems with people saving files back to their
networked home folders, but all our users have local profiles, and
besides, they're not saving back to the share! This has honestly got
me quite baffled.

Any help would be appreciated!

3.'Do not save encrypted pages to disk' setting.

I am having trouble generating a report in Excel format from a secure
site. I had the same problem in IE 6 for PCs but could get around it
by unchecking the 'Do not save encrypted pages to disk' setting in
Internet Options. Does a similar setting exist for Mac?
