Dear all, after using a normal memory stick i got this error message when i start my system, (the stick is pluged out of course) : " Using to much power at the USB port - A USB decive is consuming to much power at the moment. The USB Hub (the port on my Macbook) will be deactivated. " One other memory stick is still working at that port. Any ideas to solve that problem? Thx in advance Johannes

I have a 500 GB Western Digital external hard drive that, up until now, has given me zero problems. Today, the drive stopped appearing on my desktop. I checked in Disk Utility and can't find it there. I've shut down and restarted the computer many times, hoping that it would become visible again. I checked all the connections. Any ideas on how to get the external drive visible again? Allan

Shortcuts to a System Preference?

In setting up and learning OS X I need to get into System Preferences >
Network and others frequently. Is there a shorter way of doing this
rather than going through the System Preferences? Once in there you
have to use the mouse - the tab or arrow keys don't even work. Another
example of Mac's odd love affair with the mouse. So a shortcut would be
awesome.

make an alias to /system/library/preferencepanes/network.prefpane and
put the alias wherever is convenient. double-click the alias (or the
original file) and system preferences opens to the network pane.

It allowed me to copy it but not to make an alias. Am I missing
something?

command-option-drag the file - it creates an alias of whatever you drag
(instead of the file itself) to wherever you drag it.

Entity aaJoe uttered this profundity:

If you cmd-option-drag the file
/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane/

Onto the desktop it will create an alias to that file. You will hold down
the cmd (Applekey) and option key simultaneously while dragging the file
icon.

Additionally, the Apple menu (upper left corner) offers a "Locations" menu
where you have fast access to the Network prefpane.

You can also (10.4 and newer) drag frequently used prefpanes to the top of
the Preferences window for faster access..

Care to run that last by me again? I don't see any such feature in my
copy of System Preferences in 10.4.5. But I know that it was there in
one of the earlier OS X versions.

As others pointed out, it's really before 10.4 that was possible. The fave
bare was replaced with a search field and arrows in Tiger.

Didn't work for me either using 10.4.5.

It would be so easy if System Preferences had a drop down
menu........why they don't is anyone's guess. OS X is so bizarre.

you mean like the one in the menu bar called 'view' which lists all of
the preference panes?

Sounds great. Just where is it? View in System Preferences has a
shortcut (Command+L) but that doesn't do anything on my system. I
wonder if I have a keyboard shortcut disabled? If you're in the Finder
and hit Command+L does that bring up System Preferences? I was actually
trying to directly go to one of the areas of the System Preferences. Is
this possible?

Been following this (and other) threads, but can't figure this one out.
I'm using a G4 dual 1 gHz with 10.2.6. Everything seems fine except I
can't access any of the preferences (system, location, dock) that are
given under the Apple menu. I've got the System Preferences icon in the
dock, and can access from there OK - just not from the Apple menu.

I tried logging in under a different (test) account, and everything's
accessible fine from the Apple menu in that account, so it's something
with my account - that much I get. But from there, I am clueless; is
there a preference somewhere that's munged? I've looked in the various
preferences folders but, frankly, don't see anything as obvious as
"make.apple.menu.items.work.plist"...

4.Disabling keyboard shortcut for Display Preference Pane

Hi all,
For some reason Command-Option-C is mapped to opening the Display
Preference Pane on my new MBP running Leopard. This is a key
combination that is used in a couple of other applications that I use
and the Preference Pane call seems to override them.
I can't see this function listed in the Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard
Shortcuts list and it isn't a Quicksilver trigger.
Anyone know where I can go to disable this shortcut?
Thanks in advance,
Ed

5.Shortcut Preferences keep getting reset

I have used the Preferences panel to modify the
keyboard shortcuts, turning F12 into cmd-F12
(because a program that I like already has
something on F12).

Every day or so, somehow those Preferences reset
to their default behaviour.

What could be doing this?
Maybe it's related to changing keyboards, sleeping, rebooting...?
