  • 3. Linked Spreadsheets - Preventing Access to Source Sheet
I have created a source spreadsheet and a linked one which relates back to the information in the source. I don't want any amendments to be made to the linked sheet so I have protected everything in there, code, etc. but I also don't want people to be able to see certain parts of the sheet so have set the autofilter in the linked workbook sheet. However, people can still double click on cells in the linked sheet which brings up a message telling them to unprotect the sheet (which they can't do), but then opens the source file anyway and allows them to see everything. I notice that they can also go into the Links menu and open source from there. How do I disable the ability to actually open the source document either from the menu or by double clicking? Help gratefully appreciated

Excel 2007 files opens blank- need to click on Office button to vi

Postby Um94eQ » Sun, 20 Sep 2009 05:20:05 GMT

When any .xlsx file is launced{dbl-clicked} (from the desktop or from Windows
explorer) Excel opens up as a blank application (toolbars only). If you then
click on the Office buttton by itself the files open. I do not have to click
on Office button>open>and select the file name.

I have tried this as a potential solution...
In Microsoft Office Excel 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button, and then
click Excel Options. Click Advanced, and then click to clear the Ignore
other applications check box in the General area. Click OK.

Now the files won't open at all. Has anyone seen this? Thanks much!

Try the usual fix for this.

Tools>Options>General Uncheck "Ignore Other Applications etc."

In 2007 that would be Button>Excel Options>Advanced>General

You said you tried that already so on to next step.

Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar

1) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.

In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe" /regserver(quotes
required)>OK.

I have the exact symptoms as the OP.
Tried the solution in the reply but same symptoms still.

Any other ideas?
I can't believe MS hasn't fixed this in SP2.

Thanks,Joe

2.Excel files don't open until a click on blank worksheet

I'm having a weird Excel problem that I can't figure out the origin
of. It's been happening ever since I installed 2007 many months ago.
If I double-click an Excel file to open it, Excel opens and a
worksheet called Personal appears. However, the file I clicked on
does not oen. Then, if I simply right-click on any cell in the
Personal worksheet, Excel seems to start chugging again and then my
file opens. And just now, I've discovered that a left-click works as
well. If Excel is already open, this problem doesn't happen...I can
then open any file from within Excel or double-click a file somewhere
and that opens fine. Seems to be something to do with Excel starting
up. I've disabled Add-Ins but that doesn't seem to do anything to
help the problem.

I'm running Excel 2007 SP1 in Windows XP SP2.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions!

3.Excel 2007 blank when opening existing file

This is a minor annoyance at best as it adds unnecessary mouse-clicks every
time I try to open an existing spreadsheet unless the Excel application is
already running.

I've recently upgraded to Excel 2007--I never had this issue with 2003. When
I open an existing spreadsheet, the application opens but the file does not
come up. If I click on the RIBBON, the spreadsheet appears as if it were
hidden; if I click on another window or ALT+TAB back and forth, the
spreadsheet appears. If Excel 2007 is already running when I open on a
spreadsheet it comes up fine.

I've gone through the Excel Options menus but have found nothing that might
refer to this issue. Any assistance you can provide on this would be greatly
appreciated!
