Multiple Accounts with multiple identities
by U2lkIFRoZXRmb3Jk » Fri, 04 Mar 2005 07:49:04 GMT
I have four XP Home SP2 user accounts and four identities. I have set up all
four identities in each user account so that I can check all identities for
mail irrespective of user logon.
My problem is that the mailboxes for the identities do not synchronize
across user accounts. The result is that an item in a mailbox for account A
& identity B does not show in account B for identity B.
How do I correct this?

The whole purpose of identities is to keep things like mail
synchronization separate between accounts. If you want the
same email then use one identity not four.

Only workaround is to alter the settings for the accounts in each instance
in OE under Tools/Accounts/Mail tab for the mail accounts involved, then on
the Advanced tab, check to leave a copy on the server (but delete after a
few days to avoid filling your Inbox at the ISP). Then each identity in
each user account can download their own mail when logged on (within the
time limit you set until the messages are deleted).

Can I ask what the purpose of separate log-ins is if they all check the same
email accounts?

We have four members in our family and we like to have the independence of
our own e-mail addresses but don't mind seeing each others e-mails. We have
fairly easy going, open relationships and if anything looks like it might be
private we respect that. Might sounbd bizare to others but it works for us.

Then with respect, I think you are over-complicating matters for no purpose.
Why not just have either one log-in and four identities, or four log-ins
with one identity (the main one) on each log-in?

Thanks Jim. That seems a bit of a messy workaround. I was hoping to be able
to change some settings and leave it be. Our previous PC Windows 98SE O/S
worked with multiple identities and multiple desktops.
Is this a backwards step for microsoft?

No, it's been that way for some time. It's not much work and can make
things a lot easier for what you want. Your choice.

You call each user having their own Identity rather than sharing an
Identity, a step backward?

No, what I'm saying is that I am frustrated that functionality available in
Win98 is not available in XP. Previously we had automatic synchronization
across four desktops/identities and now we do not have that functionality.
Thanks for the link to a possibl;e solution. I'm a little nervous about
altering the registry and would like to look for another solution or learn to
with it. If I can't live with it, I might give it a try.

What you had in Win98 was not functionality. That was a lack of
functionality -- at least for most people.
WinNT/2K/XP is completely different from Win9x in its approach
to users, groups, file and folder security, email etc. Bottom line is,
if you want four people to share something as basic as email
synchronization, they should be using the same identity.

Thanks Gordon, I appreciate your concern, however we are a family not an
offcie environment and we like to have our customised desktops when we are
working. Hope this explains where I'm coming from.

Sid,
Mail for each identity is stored in the profile of the
current logon. C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Identities\{SOME-LONG-HEX-NUMBER-
HERE-FOR-EACH-IDENDITY}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
You will have six{*filter*} different folders
username1 - Identity1, Identity2, Identity3, Identity4
username2 - Identity1, Identity2, Identity3, Identity4
username3 - Identity1, Identity2, Identity3, Identity4
username4 - Identity1, Identity2, Identity3, Identity4
Open OE under each username logon, swith to each identity
and write down the store folder of each. You can find it
under Tools menu-Options menu-Maintenance tab-Store Folder
button.
Create a folder for each username
C:\OutlookExpress\username1\
C:\OutlookExpress\username2\
C:\OutlookExpress\username3\
C:\OutlookExpress\username4\
Make sure all users can read and write to these folders.
You will need to choose which identity has the seed info
for the user you want to copy and which identities you
will need to export the messages.
If you would like to merge all the stored messages, I
would export the messages from the identities, which do
not correspond to the current logon and save them in
separate folders:
C:\OutlookExpress\username1\ExportMessages\username2\
C:\OutlookExpress\username1\ExportMessages\username3\
C:\OutlookExpress\username1\ExportMessages\username4\
C:\OutlookExpress\username2\ExportMessages\username1\
C:\OutlookExpress\username2\ExportMessages\username3\
C:\OutlookExpress\username2\ExportMessages\username4\
C:\OutlookExpress\username3\ExportMessages\username1\
C:\OutlookExpress\username3\ExportMessages\username2\
C:\OutlookExpress\username3\ExportMessages\username4\
C:\OutlookExpress\username4\ExportMessages\username1\
C:\OutlookExpress\username4\ExportMessages\username2\
C:\OutlookExpress\username4\ExportMessages\username3\
You will need to copy the files under each identity which
corresponds to same logon username C:\Documents and
Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{SOME-LONG-HEX-NUMBER-HERE-FOR-EACH-
IDENDITY}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\ folder to its
corresponding C:\OutlookExpress\username1\ folder.
MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR EACH TIME REGISTRY BEFORE USING
REGEDIT.
You will then need to use regedit under each logon and
modify the following key for each identity to point to the
corresponding new Store Folder.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\\{SOME-LONG-HEX-NUMBER-HERE-
FOR-EACH-IDENDITY}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
\Store Root
After you have done this you can import the exported
copies of the messages for each identity.

2.Multiple Profiles, multiple accounts, multiple machine configuring?
Is there a vb or related method of adding *both* profiles *and* email
accounts to multiple users logins from the administrator account? I have
a network which is a workgroup (NOT a domain), in which there are about
15 users that are replicated on each of 5 machines. I'd like to be able
to add all 15 Mail Profiles, and all 15 email accounts to each of the 15
logins on these 5 machines--obviously with as little work as possible.
The mail is all retrieved from the same Exchange Server, but these
machines *cannot* be added to a domain (don't ask!). I'd hate to have to
log into every user's account, on each machine, and install every name
and profile manually!
Any help is greatly appreciated!

3.Multiple email accounts to multiple PSTs or at least multiple Inbo
Is it correct that all the email accounts I configure within a profile have
to deliver mail to the same PST file? And by default, the mail is delivered
only to the Inbox folder? Would like to have the ability to create separate
PST files (each with their own Inbox) for each email account. Also, what's
"special" about the Inbox folder (icon, mail delivery, etc)?
4.Multiple identities with multiple instances of Outlook
Hi,
I hope someone can help me. I have made multiple identities in Outlook. So
when i open Outlook, it asks me which identity to use. That works fine, but
when i open a second instance of Outlook, it automatically opens a new
instance of the same indentity, but i want to be able to choose the identity
for the second instance. Ik hope someone has the solution. Thanks a lot.

second account? Thanks.
