To make a long story short, we had to reformat the Windows partition on our hard drive. My son (cause of problem in the 1st place?) was able to burn our dbx files to CD from the LINUX partition. Now what do I have to do to reload those messages into OE6? I have tried to import, but it says no messages can be found. I can see the .dbx files on the cd in a folder whose path looks something like this (... means cut out for brevity): D:\Identities\{50....CB}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

jpg attachments are embedded in text of email message

Postby stephenchavin » Sat, 26 Mar 2005 01:08:22 GMT

at some time in the past (don't know exactly when), i noticed that
attaached jpg and other image files were visible in the text of the
e-mail. other types of attachments such as .doc do not get opened in
the text. i am unsure whether my attached jpegs are being opened and
embedded, or whether this is the so-called 'slide show' effect which
was an option in earlier versions of outlook express.

i am using a dell dimension 4300 with win xp home edition. i have
installed service pack 1 and all other updates except for service pack
2. i am using internet explorer version 6 and outlook express version
6. in outlook express tools\options\send\ and both html windows, the
'enable picture to be embedded' choice was initially checked, but
unchecking in both places did not prevent the embedding of the jpeg.
the attached jpegs are still shown in the e-mail and can be opened
normally by clicking. the embedded image is present in the message
before sending and in the sent folder.

i have nod32 antivirus, adaware, and microsoft anti spyware, all of
which give clean scans. the computer appears to be working well
otherwise.

any suggestions for blocking the embedding/slide show would be greatly
appreciated.

For your outgoing mail, are you doing Insert>Picture, or
Insert File Attachment? If it's the former, you will see the
picture as you create the message.

Hi, Wendy,

I assume you are asking about mail you send. If you
choose Insert | Picture they are embedded wherever the cursor is (Insert |
Picture is only available in HTML mail). If you choose Insert | File
Attachment they are attached. In either case the recipient will be able to
see the picture if they are using OE. OE shows attached images below the
body of the message. None of this has anything to do with the Slide Show,
which is nat available in OE6. However, if the recipient has an older
version and has the Slide Show enabled, they will see attached images as a
Slide Show.

I don't know what "enable picture to be embedded" choice you mean.

If you don't want recipients to be able to see the images, why send them?

bruce:

i use 'insert file attachment', for both the jpgs and other
attachments. only the jpg or other image files open and are inserted
into the text. i also tried to attach pjgs with the e-mail monitor
switched off, and this made no difference. any other thoughts?

Create a new identity and test it. Yours may be damaged. A
file graphic attachment will be open when a OE user
downloads the mail, but it should not be visible when you
are in Create Mail.

thanks again bruce. we have 2 separate identities and both of them
behave the same as far as the jpg's are concerned. could the problem be
with the installed outlook express ?

Let's start from the beginning. You said that the graphic
was visible when you were in Create Mail *and* Sent Items.
Are you positive???

If you create an e-mail with text, and attach a jpg, you
should see the Attachment field at the bottom of the headers
with the attachment number in it, but you *shouldn't* see
the jpg itself. Once you send it, you *should* see the
graphic in Sent Items following the text of the message.

Is this what is happening?

bruce:

i apologize for confusing you. what happens when i attach a jpg is
that the attachment field shows up with the attached jpg, but no jpg
image is visible in the text. when ii send the test email to my other
account, it arrives with the attachment field still present and with
the jpg image open and visible in the message field. the original
message, when viewed in the sent folder, also has both the attachment
field at the bottom of the header, and in addition, the opened image in
the text space. it sounds as though this is what is supposed to
happen?

Bingo! Now you got it. That is exactly how OE works. The
confusion was only that the graphic appears after the text
in Sent Items, or a recipients mail, *after* the message
body separated by a thin line. Technically it's not
embedded, but it is visible. So what you are experiencing
is normal.

1.Attachments have lost descriptive text, which now appears embedded in email text

Thanks in advance, if anyone has a suggestion.

Attachments downloaded from a list serve used to display fine (subject
of the attachment).
Something changed.
Now attachments are displayed as a list or array, of incomprehensible
attachment titles.
Within the text of the email there IS a list of the attachments.
I now have to find the correct attachment within the body of the
email, count and see what number the attachment is (like #3 of 4
attachments) and then count along the list of attachments outside the
message box and open that attachment number.

What a pain!

I tried right clicking > select all the attachments > View menu >
and can't find a selection that solves the problem.

Ideas?

2.Can't view jpg files embedded in email message

Hello:
I run Windows XP and Microsoft Office-Outlook 2007 which I recently upgraded
to. A friend will occasionally send emails with embedded jpg pictures in
the body of the text from a mac. The pictures are never attached files.
Prior to upgrading to Office 2007, I had Office 2003 and had no problems in
viewing these embedded pictures. Now, I am unable to view jpg files that are
embedded along with the text. Outlook must be downloading the images
because the email file size is aproximately 4 MB. The body of the text will
show <image1.jpg> and <image2.jpg>. However, it is simply text in the email
and not a link to a picture. The picture part of the email message is simply
a white screen.

I ensured that the sender is in the "safe senders list" and checked that in
Trust Center/Privacy options that "Permit downloads in email messages from
senders and to recipients defined in the safe senders and safe recipients
list used by the junk email filter". I also verified that "also trust email
from my contacts" is checked. She is a contact.

Can someone help me resolve this issue so I can again view the pictures
within the emails?

Thanks very much,
Scott L.

3.Text attachments embedded in body of email

When people send me emails with text attachments (like large csv data
files) the data gets embedded in the body of the email rather than
appearing as an attachment.

How do I stop this from happening? My frustration is that I have left
unchecked the box for "Put text attachments in body of message" under
Options/Attachments.

TIA

4.Attachments arrive embedded in message text

Friends, I often send word documents as file attachments to Outlook Express
6 messages. Recently people are receiving them not as attachments but as
lengthy strings of indecipherable characters within the message text. What
is going on here? How can I get back my attachment functionality? I am
running on an up-to-date WinXP Pro system.

5.Attachments embedding in the text of email

How do I make attachments appear in a separate "Attached:" line (under the
Subject line), rather than them being embedded in the text of the email?
My current default is attachments appear embedded in the email text, which
recipients cannot open.
Thanks for advice
