Can BCM database be installed on a standard SQL Server
by eric.bouchardlefebvre » Tue, 26 Aug 2008 22:44:12 GMT
Hello,
I am new to BCM, so my question may be a little be basic.
I am IT Manager for a mid-size company. Couple of weeks ago, we moved
a desktop machine from a room to another and discovered, out of a
sudden, that people in the sales departement were not able to access
their BCM anymore. We then understood that someone had instal the
software on this inapporpriate machine.
So last week, we decided to move BCM on one of our servers. I first
tought that BCM was a standard client-server software, the SQL
database acting as the server part. When I took a deeper look at the
desktop where the central database is located, I found that only a
small package of SQL Server was installed.
My questions are :
1. Is BCM a standard clients-server application (outlook = clients and
SQL = server) or a peer-to-peer application made of many outlook
instances ?
2. Can I install BCM database on a SQL Server instance and have this
instance deliver data to outlook clients
3. If so, do I need to install BCM on the "server" machine or can I
just mount the BCM database on the SQL Server?
Thank you for your help,
EBL

I'm almost positive that it's clients-server.
Yep, and I think that's actually a pretty common method of using BCM.
This link might help:
http://www.**--****.com/
It's a program called BCM Database Admin Tool, and it allows you to
create and manage a BCM database on a server without requiring you to
install Outlook or BCM on that machine.

hello everybody i wrote this message in english and french because the
support (like the database admin tool) is not the same for the french
version, you will understand when you read.
i guess from your email that you are french, unfortunately the database
admin tool does not support bcm in french, it only works for english version.
so you will have to create the database manually with sql scripts like i did
it a few month ago. but before microsoft release his database admin tool,
they published a procedure to create a database on a sql server: "Deploying
Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager in a Remote Database
Configuration" follow the link:

if you want some details, i will be happy to help you
bonjour,
a quelques mois.

I've heard that the BCM database tool is English only. If that's the
case, you should contact your local Microsoft representative and tell
them that translating this into the local language is important to

I've heard that the BCM database tool is English only. If that's the

their customers.
Unfortunaly my employer, a small business, can't carry weight for
making french translation.
My Local Microsoft representative know who i'am and what is my Businness.
he don't care about making a translation . He just want to sell us,
Microsoft Products.
But you 're right, i should call him just to make my voice heard one time
and many over time with over custommers.
I give me one month to install bcm database on my sql2005 server.
After it'll be too late.
During this time i don't think that Microsoft can make a translation.
Perhaps my call could help over People soon but i must spent my time
to work arround this .
Thanks for your help.

I am testing my Database now, my problem seem to be resolved.
First step on the server (sbs2003 in my case)
SQL serveur 2005 sp2 instance name must be called: MSSMLBIZ
I 've tried many many over solution's , i think Business Contact Manager is
locked with that.
Second step (on the computer xp sp3 in my case)
Starting office2007, then crm and create a local database.
(be carefull the sql server express service do not start automatically after
a security update comming newly. you have to
modify the property of the service connection to local system to work
arround)
Third step (on the computer)
Locate the SmallBusiness.mdf and SmallBusiness.ldf files local database
(doc&settings etc....)
copy them on a directory of the destination server. (ex c:\crmdatabase)
Fourth step (on the server)
Start sql server management studio launch the MSSMLBIZ server instance name.
double clic on database then join browse the directory making up
(crmdatabase) and attach it.
return to the computer and say it you want to open a shared database (give
the netbios serveur name)
automaticaly the databasename appear. It's ok.
Now i am making many many test i''ll give you my conclusions
Sorry for my bad english . Is someone can make the correction for me ?

1.BCM Database on standard SQL server
Why is the Datbase admin tool only working for Office and Outlook with BCM
2007.
Is there a possibility to do the same "trick" with Office and Outlook with
BCM 2003?
2.Outlook with BCM installed on SQL server cant connect to database
Question:
Can BCM 2007 client access a shared database hosted on SQL2005 on the same
machine client installed on?
I know this should not normally be done, but have new client who has one
remote user who is the MD who uses an RDP session to thier SBS 2003 box to
work. He does not want to have an extra desktop PC for his sole remote
access, or a Terminal Server when he's the only remote user.
The BCM database is on a custom instance/database on the SQL, but when
trying to connect to shared database, using the same details which work on
the workstations, it can connect and shows the database name.
But when we click Next we recive
"Business Contact Manager for Outlook could not complete your last action or
actions. Please try again."
In the event viewer we recive :
Event ID 17207
FCB::Open: Operating system error 32(error not found) occurred while
creating or opening file 'C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business Contact
Manager\MSSmallBusiness.mdf'. Diagnose and correct the operating system
error, and retry the operation.
and
Event ID 17204
FCB::Open failed: Could not open file C:\Documents and
Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Business
Contact Manager\MSSmallBusiness.mdf for file number 0. OS error: 32(error

I already have a standard SQL Server 2000 installation on

4.BCM database on SQL Server 2000
Hello. We are investigating using BCM for some of our sales people. We would
like to have the BCM database setup on our existing SQL Server 2000. When I
setup the BCM client (Outlook 2007 with BCM) it asks if I want to connect to
an existing database, which can be on another computer, but there is no
option to create the database on a remote server. Is this possible? If so,
can someone point me to documentation on this?
Thanks,
