The default folder for outlook is <documetn and settings
root>\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{identityID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
using tools, options, maint tab, store folder tab will not let me.

Did you create the folder first that you want to use?

You say it's not letting you, are you restarting OE?

What is it telling that it won't let you do this? Any mesages?

These questions don't require an answer.
The answer is you can't change the OE store folder to a network share
folder.
OE was not designed to use a network share folder.

thank you all.

I was hoping there was some registry hack that I can get around that.

I just may have to get another newsreader and hotmail client. I am trying
not to bloat the VHD with outlook express data and also the safety of data
preserved on the Virtual server host

The answer is simpler than you'd think. I've been doing it for about 4
years and I have numerous PCs all capable of checking my mail on the same
folder on my server. The one BIG catch is that you can only access that
shared folder (holding all your .dbx folders) by ONE PC at a time. NEVER
try to open mail on the shared folder by more than one at a time or you'll
automatically change back to the default location.

The answer is...run regedit and search for "store root". See it showing
your current folder location? Just edit that line to reflect the new
network store location you want, exit regedit, and copy the .dbx folders to
the location you just specified. Now start OE and there it is. Now close
OE and go do the same thing on another PC in your house/business. Open OE
there and by golly there's the same mail folders you saw 5 minutes earlier
on a different PC.

I've never found anything anywhere that tells folks how to do this. It's
like they're trying to keep it a secret. And you definitely can't do this
under the maintenance tab for store folder. Good luck,

We've gone over this many times in the past. There are those who will try
anything even though it is not recommended. The problem is the potential
for corruption of the message store is increased, there is the possiblity
that if the network share is not available when a user opens Outlook
Express, a new message store will be created and it will be completely
empty, which can alarm an unwary user. We've had one user who used to post
his "advice" to users who've asked this question in the past. But Chris has
not been around for quite some time and I don't even know if he is still
using the method he recommended earlier.

FWIW, his advice can be found in this posting on Google, and you should be
warned that you are doing something that can cause you to lose your stored
messages and I would not recommend it.

The hack has been around since OE4. The point is that it always results in
message loss.

This self-proclaimed "tech guy" is doing people a disservice by repeatedly
posting this information.

I could see there is potential message loss except in narrow circumstance
where the message store is not critical. If OE is used as news reader only
or on web email (hotmail) from a non production vpc VM on a standalone
physical host, the loss is no big deal and actually may delay VHD
expansion.

admittedly, a better newsreader client could be used but that means
installing another program on the vm

1.need help changing Store Folder to network share

I have WinME running in Virtual PC on an XP machine. I'd like to have both
instances of OE share a single Message Store Folder. From what I gather, the
only connection between Guest and Host OS is though a network share. For
example, if I want to copy or move files from WinME to XP, I just drag them
to the appropriate XP folder via network share.

If someone has experience with setting up a common OE Store Folder over a
network, I'd appreciate your help because it's not working as expected.
Here's what I did:

I created a network share for the XP/OE Store Folder and then changed the
WinME Store Folder to point to it. Although the WinME OE seems happy with the
network Store Folder, my existing messages and folders don't show up. With
all OE's quirks, this didn't surprise me and I figure there's probably a
simple fix.

To troubleshoot, I created a new folder "test" in the WinME OE and put a
message in the folder. For reasons I can't fathom, text.dbx doesn't show up
in the XP Store Folder. I searched both drives for test.dbx and it doesn't
seem to exist anywhere!! Explorer Search is set to find hidden files, and I
even un-hid the folders just to make sure.

Further testing showed I can assign the Store Folder to a location on the
virtual machine and all the .dbx files are visible in the new location
including text.dbx. But when I change the Store Folder back to the XP Store
Folder via network share, test.dbx remains invisible.

I know a common Store Folder can be implemented in a dual-boot scenario, but
in that case, a network share is not required. So I'm not sure if my problem
is related to using a network share, or somehow related to how virtual
machines work.

Can anyone explain this behavior, or otherwise tell me how to use a common
Store Folder for both machines?

Thanks
David

2.Cannot Change Store Folder to Network Location

I have tried to change teh store folder of a colleagues OE6 to a network
location that he has full control over and it will not let me select the
folder.

Is OE6 not capable of this?

And if not, is there a way to achieve it?

3.Import and export store folder (Local Folder) over network

Hello,

I got a new computer and I am trying to import one folder
(only) from my old computer's store folder to new
computer store folder. I was told that when I import
through the network, I have a choice to select only the
folder, I want to import. I checked Microsoft site and I
didn't find a page how to accomplish this task.

Can some body direct me to a site or give me instructions?

Thank you so much in advance.

4.Mail store folder not changed to shared drive

I have a small XP network - effectively 3 PCs connected
together.

All 3 PCs have Outlook Express v6. Due to the location
of the PCs, a user will log on to whichever PC is closest
to them at the time, with the intention of checking their
email etc.

The problem is that on PC1 I have created a shared
directory to contain each users email store so that they
see exactly the same email regardless of which PC they
logon to.

On PC2 I have then attempted to change the mail store to
that networked area. Outlook Express accepts this
directory and tells you to exit for it to be permanent,
but when I go back in it has defaulted back to the local
area, an not the area on the other networked PC (PC1).

If I set the new mail store to somewhere locally on the
PC then this works fine, but not if it is to a networked
area.

Is it possible to have a central storage area for mail
across a network, without having a dedicated Exchange
server?
