Desperate for help with Outlook 2003 (mail to hyperlink opens mutiple browsers)

Postby Frustrated » Mon, 15 Jan 2007 04:14:26 GMT

I'm really desperate for a fix here. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2, IE6. I
upgraded from from Office XP to Office 2003. When I did, two things
happened. The Windows Installer box keeps popping up everytime a new
mail message comes in. (Sometimes it pops up for no reason). I tried a
Windows Installer cleanup utilitiy, but it didn't work. I ended up
having to reload Office 2003, same prob. (Ive since tried repairing and
reloading it several times)

The REAL problem is that my e-mail works fine, but my wifes (same
computer, both of us are administrators) can't e-mail hyperlinks in
webpages. She can send and receive fine, but if she clicks on a mailto
hyperlink on a webpage, it hangs, then proceeds to open 60 web browsers
before I finally have to shut the whole program down.

I found out that the "URL: MailTo Protocol" is missing in the file
types section of Windows Explorer, but it is not missing on my side of
the computer. (Again, my e-mail works fine) I tried fooling with the
registry, but that's about as deep as my knowledge of software wants to
go. I can't seem to manually add that protocol to the file types.

I've got about 12 hours into this already. My wife is sharpening the
steak knives..
Someone please HELP! I'd be forever grateful.

Hi,

Well its Outlook that would manage the MailTo protocol, being your default
email program, therefore can I suggest first off to put in your Office 2003
CD and follow the installer that is poping up - it may be trying to fix this
problem. You may also need your XP CD. Let us know what the installer is
trying to do.

It sounds to me that your browser has been hijacked.

1. Download hijackthis from http://www.**--****.com/
2. Install hijackthis on your C: drive.
3. Open the program and click on Do a system scan and save a logfile
4. Save the logfile.
5. Visit http://www.**--****.com/
6. Either copy and paste your logfile contents into the space provided, or
Click on the Browse button and locate your logfile.
7. Click on Analyze
8. Wait a few minutes and the results will be displayed in your browser.
9. Follow the instructions for the "{*filter*}" entries.

Be careful, not all "unknown" entries are truly bad guys.

Good luck.

1.Hyperlinks in Outlook 2003 always open new IE browser window

My last resort
Running Office 2003 with IE 6sp1
O/S Win XP sp1
Hyperlinks included in an Outlook email will always open a new instance of
IE no matter what! I can have no IE sessions open or multiple. I can click
the same hyperlink over and over and it will still open a new browser window.

I have tried the many "so-called" fixes to no avail.
I have done the IE advanced options "reuse window" option.
Tried the Use DDE option in the folder options for URL:Mailto protocol, HTM
and HTML.

I have tried the registry setting for Reusewindow value=1.
I have even tried changing the email editor from Outlook to Express and back
again to no avail as well.

It appears to be specific to Outlook 2003 and it works with Express and
older versions of Office work fine. I know many have had this problem but
has any solution been offered to fix this as well? This problem was
replicated on many machine at my company as well. Any ideas?

2.a click on an e-mail hyperlink opens over 50 ie browser window

Yes - I ran a virus scan - that was obviously one of the very first things I
did when I saw the problem. I updated Windows, Office and Norton Security.
Nothing helped.

I don't understand why this wouldn't be an office issue when this problem
has also been seen in Outlook - I googled the problem and found this very
same behavior, but that was back in 2004 and I was not able to contact the
person - the only difference was that his problem was in Outlooke and opened
over 60 windows and my friend's problem was in Word and opened over 50. In
both cases the problem was only related to the e-mail hyperlink. I work quite
a bit with computers and have never seen this behavior before. Since it's not
my computer, I don't really want to reinstall anything, but that may be the
solution.

Any help would be appreciated.
