Importing Word Text file into contacts
by DaveW » Sun, 11 Jan 2004 22:58:18 GMT
Has anyone imported a word text file into Outlook
contacts. I have tried saving as a text file and bringing
across using the importing tool which resulted in a
contact being produced for each word in the text document.
Is there a proper way to do this?

As long as the file is comma or tab delineated with fields clearly marked,
import in into Excel then save it as a CSV file.
You can then import the CSV file into Outlook.

Thanks - I have done this and now when mapping custom fields each value will only map to one field. Any ideas?

You'd have to provide all the detail of what you did for anyone to figure
out what's wrong, including how you identified fields.

Thanks Rus
With earlier versions of outlook I have created a csv as you suggested and mapped the values to the outlook contact fields. However with newer versions (2000/2003) it seems that there may be a bug in the mapping function using the Map Custom Fields window. It allows you to take the first value and map it to the name field I then press the next button to reveal the next value and it seems to automatically mapthe new value to the name field and I can't seem to change it to the address field without changing the earlier name field also. I hope that make sense. Any help would be gratefuly received as I am running out of hair.

Custom fields? You can't map custom fields.

All that's required is for you to drag and drop the appropriate field names
from the left hand side (your field names) to the right hand side (Outlook
field names) and then let Outlook perform it's magic importing your file
(this is on the assumption that your file contains the field names in the
first row of the file).
Is there a reason you are reviewing the individual field values during the
mapping process?

1.Enforcing Charset for imported Text files into Word
Hi there.
Part of a Word app I'm creating in VBA involves reading and parsing a
text file to transform the contents into a properly styled Word
document.
I'm doing this on a DocumentChange event, where I check the save type
of the file and check the first few characters for a tag before going
on to my transformation code.
However, some of the text files contain non-ASCII characters (open and
close quotes for examples). The problem with this is that Word then
displays a message asking for confirmation of the file type. This
message destroys the event handling so execution is halted at that
time.
I was thinking that if I could MIME encode the text file, I should be
able to bypass the conversion dialog and let the text come through as
UTF-8 or charset iso-8859-1.
Has anyone had an experience doing this, or knows of a way to force
the charset when opening a text file?

hi

I have tried setting the file up as a csv, and import them that way, but
that did not work.....
im using outlook 2003 also.
4.importing contacts via text file
i'm at a loss....
i have a customer who has a list of email addresses that she would like
to import into her outlook 2001 contacts. basically, we can get the
email addresses to show up as different contacts either by importing a
text file (which has E-Mail in the first line followed by one email
address per line) or through a CSV file saved in excel (same format).
however, if we then try to create a distribution list with these contacts,
nothing seems to show up. we click to create a new contact list. we
then click on the Address Book button and then choose the contacts in
the left column. finally, we click on the Add button and it adds an "e-
mail" for each contact (it doesn't list the email address...it just says "E-
mail." however, then nothing shows up in the New Distribution List
window except for a period.
opening each individual contact displays an email address. but, i can't
seem to send to these contacts either. i get an error saying something
about a transport server error (?).
the workaround is to copy and paste the email addresses (separated by
semicolons) from word into the box which appears after you click the
Address Book button when adding a distribution list.
does anyone have any other suggestions for importing these files?
thanks!

5.Importing CSV file into outlook contacts PROGRAMATICALLY(not using
Hi,
There are 9000 contacts in the database. I have tried to add one by
one manually using ContactItem and finally saving it to the Outlook Contacts.
But it is taking 30 Minutes to copy the contacts.
To overcome this problem, I am trying to copy contacts first to the CSV
file and after that uploading it to the Outlook Contacts. But I dont have
idea how to import the CSV file programmatically into the Outlook Contacts
using C#.Net...
Any help will be highly appreciated.
