Outline Codes vs. Custom Fields numbers in 2007

Postby U2Ft » Wed, 14 Nov 2007 03:46:02 GMT

This might be a simple questions but I can't seem to find the answer. We
have recently converted from PS 2003 to PS 2007 and I need to make some
additions to some VBA macros for Project Professional.

In 2003 I was able to reference a field value via:

If ActiveProject.ProjectSummaryTask.EnterpriseProjectOutlineCode1 = "(a
specific value)" Then

But when I add new custom fields in PS 2007 I cannot see what their field
number is that I need to reference. Is there an easy way to find this out or
something I'm overlooking?

Thanks,
Sam

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

Sam,
Take a look at the thread for the post titled, "Is field visible in
Current Table", first posted by Johnny on 10/29/3007 in this same
newsgroup. See if that answers your question, or at least gets you
started. If not, can you be more specific in what you want.

You can use the "FieldNameToFieldConstant" method to return the constant
from the name of the field.
Sounds sort of like what you want.

That's exactly what I needed. I added the method to the code and it works
perfectly!

Thank you :)

1.Enterprise Custom Outline Codes/Fields vs. local fields

I understand the idea of Custom Outline Codes and fields. I understand the
concept of local customizable fields. The fields that can be added using
Insert>Column on the project plan appear to contain both.

To practice paranoia, may I assume that it is correct to use only the
enterprise customizable outline codes and fields should be used when defining
fields to be used across the enterprise and that I should ignore the
customizable fields in the Insert>Column drop down.

2.MSPS 2007 Ent Text Fields vs. Outline Codes

In 2003, there was a big difference between using Ent Text Fields vs Ent
Outline Codes. Outline codes allowd a Hierarchy setup of the values, acted as
the dimensions to the OLAP cube, and allowed us to group by in when i hit the
Open button in MS Project. Now, in 2007, is there a difference between the
two. it seems like Ent Text Fields are as Powerfull as Outline Codes. is
there any difference between the two?

3.Enterprise Custom Codes vs Enterprise Outline Codes

Hello,
I need to define various templates for a large
organization. Please shed some light on Enterprise Custom
Codes (ECC) and Enterprise Outline Codes (EOC).

I have the following questions:
1) Is it correct to say that both ECC and EOC can be used
to sort, filter, group?
2) In what situation/condition that we must use ECC or
EOC?
3) Can we define a data element to be both ECC and EOC?
does this have any negative impact?
4) Can EOC be used to represent graphical indicators like
ECC?

I appreciate very much the guidances.
Thank you.

4.Resource outline code vs. Enterprise Number

Greetings,

I'm flying solo now on a Project 2003 EPMS a consultant helped out with on a
lot of the initial configuration as I was training up, and am noticing that
some outline codes contain only 1st-level items in the lookup table.

Since Project-level custom fields are also available in Portfolio Analyzer
(the main place we'll be using the coding for analysis) I was wondering why
it might be better to use an outline code to define, say, a resource's cost
center when I could assign a Resource Enterprise Number to contain the same
data and use the same values in the lookup table for the Number value list.

Other than saving me the effort, is there any reason to use outline coding
rather than project and resource level value lists when all items in the
lookup table are 1st-level?

Thanks,
Kevin

5.Custom Help for Custom fields (Outline codes etc.)

We have defined a lot of the custom outline codes. However, some of our PMs
and TLs find themselves not understanding or remembering the use of each
field. Is there any way to add a general description for those fields? Is
there any way to customize the help functions? Would this be something to
put into a customized project guide?

Thanks for any guidance.
