  • 5. old project names were picked up in Master project
I am using MS Project 2002 SP-1 version. I use a project template with filename "template"to create my projects (multiple individual projects which will be sharing resources). e.g. Project name "Project 1", "Project 2". I finished all resources sharing and have resources pool generated. The next day, I re-open the resources pool and asked it to build the master project file for me. Instead of having Project 1, Project 2 etc showed up in the Master project, it shows "template", "Template". That is somehow Master file picked up the original template file name. I tried to change the file properties and page set up, where I can find the reference to the original "template" filename and changed it to the new name and rebuild master project. Nothing happened. How can I pick up the name name in the Master Project ?

Project can not open the file error

Postby U3VuS2luZw » Sun, 25 May 2008 22:32:00 GMT

Help! Over the last two days I have been adding task to a my project plan,
saving, closing, opening all without issue. That is up until yesterday I went
to open my file and Project gives me the error "Project can not open the
file". I'm using the standalone (non server) MS Project Professional 2003. I
am able to open other project files that I created as well. Nothing special
about the file I can not open, no links, imports, or anything else, just 400
plus task, that will be difficult but no impossible to redo. I am wondering
if anyone else has come across this error and maybe found a trick or two I
can try to recover my Project file. The MS Project version is our corporate
and they do not provide any service packs and I see that there maybe 3
service packs availble.. not sure if those will help since the other files
open fine. All suggestions welcome....

Many thanks in advance...

Hi SunKing,

I don't have any guaranteed ways but here's a suggestion or two:

Try opening the file through the operating system. Navigate to the
file in the directory structure.

Try creating a new file and then inserting the problem file into the
new one. See if deselecting the "link to file" option helps.

If the file has been saved on a file server, see if the IT folk have a
backup that you could use.

I do also strongly suggest working with your IT staff and getting
those service releases (at least through SP-2) installed.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi SunKing,

Further to Julie's helpful comments, if you do manage to get it up and
running, you might well have a corrupt file. If you suspect a corrupt file,
you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file
corruption and/or bloat.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :-)

I am using Project Pro 2003 with Project Server 2003. One project in PS

2.MS Project Error Message when opening mdb file - -cannot open file

In MS Project Pro 2003 after getting to the last screen when going through
the process of opening a project from an Access 2002 mdb file, I get an
error: Cannot open file. Project allows me to see the related mpp in the
Import Wizard screen but after I click open, I get the error. The mdb is not
corrupt as I am able to open the file from Project 2003 Pro when the file it
is in Access 2003. Something I've noticed is that after I receive the error,
I see the .lbd file for the mdb file. It does not go away until I exit out of
MS Project 2003.

3.2007 - Open last file on startup always results in "file caused serious error last time opened"

Opened Project 2007, created brand new project with two tasks, nothing
else. Saved and closed the new project Dummy1, then selected Tools |
Options | General, set Open last file on startup, and closed Project.

Re-opened Project and received "file Dummy1 caused serious error last
time opened" dialog. Selected No, then selected Tools | Options |
General, cleared Open last file on startup, and closed Project.

Re-opened Project, no error. Selected Dummy1 from Recently Used
list. Opened with no errors. Closed Dummy1, reset Open last file on
startup, and closed Project. Re-opened Project and received "file
Dummy1 caused serious error last time opened" dialog.

Note that Help | About | Disabled items window never showed any
entries at any time.

Clues to resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
