I don't know if this is the place, but A and B have separate accts on the computer - Win XP. A uses web mail (gmail and yahoo). B uses Eudora, which is thus configured for her. i.e. an out message form comes up with From:B address. If A clicks a website email link, Eudora opens (even tho A has not configured Eudora and doesn't use it-it's on the computer, so on both accts/desktops-guess it's found by default) with an out-message from B. A can't change the From:B, so would have to send it that way and find any reply in B's mail. Can A set up his own Eudora acct, so when A clicks such links it will show an out-message From:A (but B links will show from B)? (Both A and B are Admin accts, if that mattters). And what would clicking a website email link show if there was no email client on my computer? Would it come up in a browser email? Brad

Hi everyone, I am quite annoyed over the fact that I am loosing focus on the frame where I am editing a new email whenever Eudora auto-downloads new emails. I wonder if this could be a configuration fault, or if it is a bug. Any ideas someone? Regards, P-T

What are 550 & 553 errors, Verizon says they are Eudora codes

Postby Jeff S. » Sun, 23 Jan 2005 05:13:24 GMT

According to Verizon, the error coded 550 & 553 are Eudora's codes and
not Verizon codes.

It occurs when trying to send mail accessing a Verizon smtp server,

I get a smilar message when trying to send to the same account using a
different IP smtp server.

I can send to and from within Verizon's Net mail but not when using
Eudora.

Am using 6.2paid, WinME, Norton Anti, Z A firewall (both norton and ZA
have been shut down and the error still occurs.) K6 450MHz, 256meg
ram.

This started after updating to 6.2.0.14 several weeks ago, the problem
may have been there for a while, just noticed it Wednesday.

Just can't get consistant responses to narrow down the field of
possiblities.

Thanks in advace,
Jeff

<Arte Johnson> Veeeerrrrryyyyyy Interesting, but dumb </Arte
Johnson> Verizon has a help item, as a google on Error: 550
turned up a link [non-working, since it's a Verizon customer help
page and you need to be logged in to access it] titled "Verizon
Online - Help & Support - Error 550 Relaying Denied"

SImilarly, 553 is Verizon rejecting your authentication.

Maybe next time you'll luck out and talk to one of the Verizon
techs who know what they're talking about.

Which typically results from not having your authentication set
up correctly in Eudora in, probably, the cases that resulted in
both errors. 550 came up, probably, when you tried to send email
using a non-verizon email address - had you been authenticated,
the server would have accepted it, since you weren't, it gave you
the Error: 550.

It's Verizon's server that gave you the error code both times.

Ogden is correct. the codes are standard smtp/pop codes (whatever, and
mean you have NOT set up the correct authentication.

 XXXX@XXXXX.COM says...

As I understand it, about 3 years ago, Verizon changed their system to
refuse to send any email that didnt have a From address same as the
sender's own @verizon.net address. No third party email.

Has this changed now? Do they now use authentication to allow that?

$ XXXX@XXXXX.COM :

It has changed!

I can send email via Verizon's smtp server (outgoing.verizon.net) when I
am hooked up to my work isp (med.cornell.edu) via modem. Previously, I
would have had to go via smtp.med.cornell.edu.

When using the verizon smtp server, outgoing.verizon.net, I have to have
authentication turned on. With the newer versions of Eudora it is
possible to have that specified for the smtp server.

If you need more details, tell us what version of Eudora you're using.

And not only originating from a different ISP, but you can also send an
email message now that doesnt say it is FROM a Verizon address?
Specifically, you can be someone else on the FROM line, for example, it
can now say FROM your own third party web site?

I think that is what you said, I just didnt hear those words about the
FROM line, which was the original problem, even when sent logged in at
Verizon.

So that sounds great, and makes Verizon be of interest again as an ISP.
Their $30 ADSL price makes them very attractive, and would cut my cost to
less than half. Is all else at Verizon otherwise OK? Apparently their
newserver must be working :)

 XXXX@XXXXX.COM

I believe so.

See above
Fow most people, usenet via Verizon works fine to excellent most of the
time. My use is excellent >97% of the time. YMMV.

Email has its problems. Many people complain that (some of) their email
arrives late.
Furthermore, Verizon has 2 kinds of blocks in place.

Firstly, the VZ "sender verification" is meant to make sure that a message
comes from the smtp server it says is the sender. VZ therefore does some
querying during the initial handshake to make sure of that. Sometimes the
sending smtp server is slow in responding and VZ cuts them off. Sometimes
the sending smtp server, although legit, is (in verizon's opinion)
misconfigured and VZ calls them bad and drops the connection.

Secondly, Verizon has placed most European and Asian country domains (.nl,
.fr, .it etc) on a blocklist, which means that no one from those domains
can email you until VZ has determined that either the particular sender
(such as XXXX@XXXXX.COM , or XXXX@XXXXX.COM ) or the whole domain (such as
anything free.fr) is indeed OK. What that means is that if you have a
website where XXXX@XXXXX.COM is listed as the email address to
contact, no one can reach you unless Verizon has precertified them as OK.
How Pierre in France or Kees in Holland is going to get certified is
(apparently) none of Verizon's concern. Let them send their email into
VZ's black hole. If Pierre is lucky, he will get a message eventually
from his ISP stating that either the email address is wrong or the
receiving smtp server is permanently off line.

My 3.0/768 connectivity is very good and stable. No complaints there. I
have it now as part of the 1 year commitment under the NY metro plan,
which gave me also a new modem/router/wireless connecting thingamajiggy
(which I have yet to install, since my current seetup works fine).

Thanks Han, I appreciate your comments. Spam is of course a monumental
problem today, but that email verification part doesnt really sound so
useful.

$ XXXX@XXXXX.COM :

It's been said here before: Verizon is very, very good in delivering
connectivity at reasonable prices. Their newsservice is pretty darn good
as well. Their webspace stinks and is worse than if they just pulled it
altogether. Email has severe drawbacks (but I use it for purchases and
bills nevertheless).

Thank you, both

I have long suspected that Verizon had a policy that the tech's can't
really tell you what the problem is, unless it is your fault.

What suprised me about this situation is that both personalities have
been working for the past 2 years then suddenly stopped.

When they said it was a Eudora problem, I knew better, but didn't know
enough to be able to dispute it, so I came here.

Thank you, again.

Jeff

Hi Wayne,

Yes they have and it seems that the address that becomes authenticated
is the only address you can send under.

I have an older account with "vze" address and a from address that is
not verzion.net

It will authicate to the authenticated return address but not to the
originally issued address.

Hummm.

Weird.

Oh, well. I guess that's Verizon.

I should be getting 7meg ADSL from Verizon soon. They have been wiring
the entire area with fiber optics.

All that is left is running it from the street to the interface box on
the side of the house.

They are also doing missionary marketing for TV via the lines.

WaaHooo.

2.Media player says I am not connected to the internet when I am

Hi,

Hope somebody can help me here, I ripped a couple of CD's today but Media
Player 11 beta was unable to find the CD info as it said I was not connected
to the internet, neither did the online tab work.

I checked that "Work Offline" was not ticked in the File Menu.

I assumed it was a problem with the Beta so I followed Microsoft's roll back
instructions on their support page and now I am back to Media Player 10.
When I right click an unknown music file and select find album info, I get
the same error message that "You must be connected to the internet to get
album info". I am connected to the internet and I am posting this question
lol.

Can anybody help??

P.s. for info the Media Guide is giving me the same message also.

Thanks Sean
