I have been using eudora 6 on winXP home edition without any problems up to Feb 7th. Since that date Eudora failed to retrieve the mail present on the server (I get a message "Sorry, you do not have any new mail" but THERE IS new mail on the server: both direct access to the POP server and mailwasher correctly show the new messages) On Feb 7th I unisnstalled the Norton antivirus and I believe that the trouble is related to this, however in the same period I also upgraded my Zonealarm. Any suggestion as far as causes of the problem and way to solve it? I'm getting plagued with virus laden emails that cause Eudora to hang, giving me the message of "An error occurred with a temporary file while transferring your mail." I'm having to go into the webmail interface to my email account several times an HOUR to delete the problem messages so that the rest of the email can be downloaded. I've been getting virus laden emails for several weeks without Eudora hanging on them, so this is a new problem. Does anyone have a FIX for it rather than a crappy work-around (using webmail to delete the offending email). Despite many years of using Eudora and many GBs of archived email in Eudora mailbox format, I'm about ready to dump Eudora and go back to a shell email client that doesn't barf on attachments (virus laden or not) and doesn't infect my messages with HTML and "format flowed". jc

Hi, Some of my email addresses are filtered with SpamAssassin. I have a filter that checks if header X-Spam-Status contains Yes. Normally this works. Now I received a SWEN message with the following header: X-Spam-Status: No, hits=1.2 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_30,FROM_NO_USER,MICROSOFT_EXECUTABLE version=2.53 The "YES" in "BAYES" triggered the filter and incorrectly labeled it as spam. How can make the filter only look at the first line of the header, or some other suggestion to make the filter work robust.
  • 5. Eudora Viewing Pane Windows Causing Pains
Every once in a while my Eudora program (6.0.1.1 PAID) seems to reset parts of itself -- especially the viewing pane windows. Generally, I have them set so that 4-5 lines of messages are visible at the top and the preview of the highlighted message is visible in the "viewing pane" at the bottom. Recently, the message portion is all the way to the top and the viewing pane is all that is readable. This does not happen on all mailboxes. I can reset it by pulling it back into place, but that is no guarantee that it will stay that way. I am aware of the F7 function which is what I may resort to, but the preview pain helps me go through a fairly large amount of e-mail for several accounts more quickly than guessing about subjects and senders. (I am aware of two updates, but have had several problems with them so returned to 6.0.1.1) Any ideas?

Agent moves Eudora icons.

Hi, I have just configured Agent so that when I like to send emails,
Agent opens Eudora automatically.
When Eudora has opened on the toolbar I always see some icons moved.
For example I see "Save file, Sort and Search Eudora" icons moved.
They have moved to second line of the Toolbar.
The Toolbar becames a thick sheet and thi icons move on the bottom (in
second line).
Every time I have move the icons to the right positions.
Many times every day.
Thanks for some info.

Hello,

If I remember correctly, the data concerning toolbars is saved in an ini
file ?

What about marking it as read-only, in its properties ?

Hello,

Well, the file is

C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application
Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.ini

(all this is written on the same line)

In the Windows explorer, you have to right-click on it, and select the
"Properties" command.

You have a "Properties of Eudora.ini" dialog box that opens, and down
the "General" tab (the one that appears by default), you see an
"attributes" field, with several checkboxes.

Check the "read only" checkbox, and click on OK.

I tried that, I added a button on a toolbar, and the next time I opened
Eudora the button had disappeared.

The directories I mentioned are not hidden by default. Should one appear
to be, you would have to use the "Tools, options of the folders"
command, and in the Display tab, find a category "hidden files and
folders", in which you have to check "display hidden folders and files",
and validate.

Excuse if one of the texts is not exactly written the same way, I had to
translate from French.

Bad, any changes in Eudora will not be saved then.

Supposing sometimes you want to change the Eudora configuration, and
keep changes, then you can launch it with a batch containing this

=========== Begin of Ch_Eud.bat =========
ATTRIB -R "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application
Data\QualComm\Eudora\Eudora.ini"
"C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe"
ATTRIB +R "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application
Data\QualComm\Eudora\Eudora.ini"
===========  End of Ch_Eud.bat  =========
(Ch_Eud.bat contains 3 lines)

but during that session of Eudora, you avoid using Agent.

In fact, if only Agent is a problem for Eudora, instead of protecting
Eudora.ini manually against writing as I said first, you can launch
Agent like this :

=========== Begin of Agent.bat ==============
ATTRIB +R "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application
Data\QualComm\Eudora\Eudora.ini"
"C:\Program Files\Agent\Agent.exe"
ATTRIB -R "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application
Data\QualComm\Eudora\Eudora.ini"
============  End of Agent.bat  =============
(3 lines)
(the path to Agent has to be corrected)

and you have to know that if you make changes to the Eudora
configuration during that time, they will not be changed, or you have to
close Agent first.

This depends on the degree of modification ability you want to keep.

I said nothing about this, thinking that if you want to add a button or
move a window in Eudora once a year, you can remember you have to
uncheck the checkbox you checked to prevent modifications.

Try looking in C:\Program Files\Eudora\Data, or wherever Eudora's
Data subdirectory is located.

Hello,

Well, in the help menu, select the About command, and have an attentive
look at what is written, after the "Data" word, down the box.

If this does not help, you launch a search with the keys "Windows F",
and select "all drives and folders". Before validating, select the C: drive.

Of course, just in case, you do not forget what I said about hidden folders.

Eudora puts its data files wherever you specify when you install Eudora.
Do you have any idea what you specifed? If not, and you are using a
relatively recent version of Eudora, you can find the location of the dat
directory in Help | About Eudora.

It's probably easier to remake them. Penelope is totally
saturated with bugs. I use it for the same reason you do (foreign
correspondence), but I keep Eudora 7 on the same box as my mainstay.

I have been enjoying Eudora since its very beginning. Nevertheless, I

5.moving Eudora files from 98se to already-installed Eudora on XP

Hi:
My uncle uses "bootit" to dual-boot his computer. He can choose
either win98se or winXP. He loves 98se, but is making the slow move
over to XP.
Here's the problem. He has used Eudora 7.1 on 98se for quite
some time, and has built up a lot of filles, messages, etc.
He has now started using another copy of Eudora 7.1 from inside
XP.
Is there any way to get all the old messages and other valuable
stuff from 98se and add them to the messages & other stuff already
in XP?
I am not familiiar with Eudora, but am quite capable with
computers (19 years), so if it can be done, and someone here is kind
enough to give the general proceedures, I'm confident that I can do
it for him.

     Thanks very much.
