  • 1. Word 2002 glitch
Hi, I purchased a brand new Dell computer with Word 2002 pre-installed. From the first time I turned on the computer, Microsoft Word is stuck in a reduced functionality mode. I can only view a document, that is all. The activation process calls for inserting the original Microsoft Word disk and clicking: Next. When I click next, nothing happens. All activation processes with Dell Technicians have failed. Basically the Dell Technicians (who may have never seen a PC before Dell hired them as experts), are stumped and have only been able to send me new Microsoft Word 2002 CD. That all well and good, but all the CD and dozens of uninstalls and reinstalls are not getting Word out of reduced functionality mode. While I getting buried up to my armpits with Microsoft Word CD from Africa, India, Mexico, Panama, etc., I have been trying to get help from Microsoft, because it seems to be a glitch. Word may have been installed incorrectly by the manufacturer and unrecoverable. Microsoft refuses to help because it is a preinstalled program and kicks me right back to Dell. I am currently at a stalemate. If anyone who can help is kind enough to provide assistance, could you please e-mail me at XXXX@XXXXX.COM . I do not know my way around these newsgroups and may not be able to get back to this page for an answer. Thank you.
  • 2. preventing documents from changing the view
Every time I view a Word document from someone (I'm using Word XP), the view changes and the next time I start Word I still get the view the other person used to write the previous document. Is there any way to have all documents open up with the view that I prefer and also not have documents change my view settings? Thanks, -Yves
  • 3. Paragraph Navigation in 2003
Hello All, In prior versions of Word (97 anyway) CTRL + [down arrow] navigated from the current paragraph to the next paragraph, to the next paragraph, etc. regardless of any automatic numbering. In Word 2003, CTRL + [down arrow] will navigate to the next paragraph. However, if the paragraph has automatic numbering or bullets, the cursor will navigate to the number or bullet. Then the next CTRL + [down arrow] will navigate, NOT to the next paragraph, but a couple of characters to the right, to the text of the numbered or bulleted paragraph. It now may take 1 CTRL + [down arrow] stroke, or possibly 2 CTRL + [down arrow] strokes to get to the next paragraph depending on whether the paragraph has automatic numbering. How do I turn this off? Thanks for your help!

  • 5. Automatically Update Document Styles
I'm trying to use this feature in Word XP but it seems to keep unchecking itself even though I've saved the file. I tried testing it using Word 2000 as detailed below but it had no problems. Can anyone shed any light on why this is occuring? I did the following in both Word XP and Word 2000 1. Create a Word DOT file named NewStyle.dot save it in the same folder as Normal.dot. 2. Add a style named NewStyle to NewStyle.dot and save it. 3. Create a Word RTF document named TestDoc.rtf and save it somewhere. 4. Open TestDoc.rtf, go to Tools > Templates and Add-ins and attach NewStyle.dot to it. Also select the "Automatically update" check box. 5. Close and save TestDoc.rtf. 6. Open the Word2000 version of TestDoc.rtf in Word 2000. The "Automatically update" check box is still selected. 7. Open the Word XP version of TestDoc.rtf in Word XP. The "Automatically update" check box is cleared. Apparently, there is something different about Word XP that will not leave the check box selected in this instance. In fact, I can't figure out a way to cause Word to leave the check box selected no matter what I do, unless the attached template is Normal. If I attach to any other template, no matter where I put it, Word clears the check box when I open the rtf document for edit later.

To: Bob, AND Any one else Who can enlighten me, Please:

I am having a similar yet more annoying problem (upon file open or save
/view ... I CAN'T GET TO SEE the precious "date modified" under VIEW DETAILS,
even if I select it each time -- I only get the NAME Column under VISTA and
Office 2003)

Is this a known problem under VISTA and office2003 ??

3.file open/views/details set details as default

When I OPEN a file, I would like my VIEWS to always be set as DETAILS. How
can I set this to be the permanent and forever default, ...so that for every
time, for all files and all folders the VIEW is always set to be DETAILS?
  Thanks!

4.Details Missing in File Folder Detail View in Word

I use Vista Home Basic with Word 2003. When I am in Word and want to look at
folders and files I either click on the open file icon or click on the word
"file" then on "open". My default view is set to "DETAILS" as I find it
helps me to see the date, time, etc. for a document.

Here's the problem: The details categories are empty. At the top of the
viewing box where the titles of the categories are supposed to be listed, the
only category listed is "Name", then there is only one other space for a
category title and it is blank. It used to list not only the title, but
other category headings (such as date, size, etc.) and then list the details
below. But somewhere along the line it quit doing so.

When I use "Open" from the Windows "Start" button the details are listed.
But I need the details listed when I use "Open" from Word - the way it used
to.

I have tried sliding the vertical divider lines that divide the category
titles to see if maybe the lists were just off the edge of the page, but to
now avail. There remains just the two columns. (The title col. and the
blank col.) I've tried resetting the default and it doesn't change or fix it.

Can anyone help with this? I'll be most grateful. Thank you!

5.File Open / View / Details Set as Default

When I OPEN a file, I would like my VIEWS to always be set as DETAILS. How
can I set this to be the default view?

I have gone to Windows Explorer Tools | Folder Options and set the folders
to be like the one shown (details) but when I go back into Word 2007 the old
yucky view is still there. Also, I need the the title of the document column
to be wider, which I can do by dragging it, but I want to set it wider as a
default, and it switches back to the yucky view as soon as I close the open
dialogue box.

This was posted previously but wasn't answered. Anybody???
