Word/Excel should let me rename my document while I am editing
by SmFyZWQ » Tue, 16 Jun 2009 12:39:01 GMT
Renaming a document is one of the most common things I do day-to-day, and yet
in all this time there's never been a feature as simple as File --> Rename to
rename the document I'm currently editing. Instead, we have to save the
document, close it, rename it in explorer, and then re-open the file.

Just save it with a different name. No need to close it to do that. If you
want to delete the originally named document, you can then do that at your
leisure.

Hi Doug,
I'm aware I can do that. It's just not the same thing as renaming, because
I have to go and do the cleanup you described, which seems unnecessary.
I'm pointing this out as an obvious, simple feature that we should expect
applications to provide, but they typically don't. Instead, they make us go
and do the work :)
Thanks for the response though,
Jared

Not to mention that a file Saved As loses some of the properties of the
original file. But from what little I know about file handling in Word (and
Windows), I just can't imagine that it would be possible to rename an open
document any more than it would be to move it. In fact, even with a document
closed, if you are using Preview view in the Open dialog, you will probably
not be able to rename it (or even delete it) because Word considers it open.

Hi Jared,
In a workgroup situation, where files need to be properly indexed, the capacity you ask for could cause havoc. It can also break
links between files etc. So, in general terms, it's better to require people to use the tools provided by the OS for such
activities. Besides, why build into the apps functions that properly belong to the OS?

The reason is the temporary lock file which opens with the document and
restricts the opening of the document to the current user. You can always
close the document and rename it from the file open dialog.

2.Word 2007, student version, won't let me edit documents
I can open documents, that were recently made and are in the queue, but no
foreign documents, i.e. downloaded from a hard drive, internet, etc. The
documents I do open, I cannot properly edit - I can only add on to what was
written or delete from the end and continue that way. No shortcuts, such as
Ctrl-C, Ctrl-A, or anything of the sort, not even arrow keys; the mouse can't
reposition the little cursor or select anything. I can start new documents,
and type fine, but still no editing capabilities as mentioned before. I
uninstalled and reinstalled, nothing. I am up to date with microsoft. I am
using Vista if that helps, but it worked fine when I first installed word, it
just suddenly started acting this way. I looked at the help. The Norton
Internet Security doesn't mess with the word, never did. Also when I close
Word, it says "Office Word has stopped working" it trys to recover but always
just restarts the program with a blank doc. The problem never resolves and I
have to click the "x" in the middle of the message to actually close word,
otherwise it keeps restarting....
I looked at the web and didn't find any help... I read the posts but they do
not seem to address the issue. I tried the different methods of fixing it,
doesn't work.
I have no "~$*.do?" files.... please help....
3.Word not letting me edit document
I received a simple document written in Word via email. When I open the
document I can only read or print it, I am unable to edit in anyway. The
document has no restrictions or security settings that would prevent editing.
The only problem I can see is that the document used Comic Sans MS Bold font
while I only show Comic Sand MS in word but have the bold version installed
on my system.
Can anyone do some detective work for me and see if they have any ideas?
Thank You
