    Has anyone else experienced this? A client is using WinXP/Word 2003 on a Windows Terminal Server. Over the past year, everytime the company pushes out a Msoft security patch and/or a WINS Upgrade the margins in all existing documents get smaller. He then has to go into each document separately and reset the margins and readjust formatting. His default printer is an HP8150. This does not get changed during the upgrades. We checked the tools, addins - the document is based on the Normal.dot, the automatically update document styles is not selected. Could this have something to do with using the TS? Or are there any other settings in Word to check? -- maryj
  • 3. one picture spread out over two pages?
    Hello, I have got a question about Word. I have cut one picture (digitally :o).) into two halves. Now I want the left half of the picture on every uneven page in the background (maybe as a watermark) and the right half on every even page in the background. This way when you open my report, it looks like one big picture. Oh yeh...can a printer, which supports printing al the way to the edge, print the two halve pictures all the way to the edge (when I place the margins in Word to the edge)? Or is this a Word thing and do I have to make my report into an PDF-file? Thanks in advance,

Word 2007: Auto-numbering, how to set a start number other than 1

Word 2007

This is a legal pleading & the format is "Response to Special Rog [#]

I'm auto-numbering using Quickparts - Fields. Now my requests have jumped
from 42 to 45. Unfortunately there does not seem to be any way to reset the
starting number to 45.

BTW: I received a doc the other day which appeared to have auto numbering in
it - using some extremely complicated set up that in fact, didn't actually
work. It inserted the same code every time & you had to manually update the
field every time so... not really auto-numbering at all, unfortunately.

What you are describing toward the end is a SEQ field. I have found that if
you save a SEQ field as an AutoText entry, it updates upon insertion. The
advantage of the SEQ field (or it could be LISTNUM) is that you can easily
set a new starting point for a given field, and subsequent ones will count
from there.

I am not clear what exactly you have inserted from Quickparts, but automatic
paragraph numbering formats can usually be restarted from any number. Right
click the paragraph and select 'Set Numbering Value'.

ListNum fields can be started or restarted from any number using a switch eg

{ LISTNUM  LegalDefault \s 45 }
{ LISTNUM  LegalDefault}
{ LISTNUM  LegalDefault }
{ LISTNUM  LegalDefault \s 50 }
{ LISTNUM  LegalDefault }
{ LISTNUM  LegalDefault }

SEQ fields are similar and as Suzanne suggests SEQ fields are very useful as
you can not only dictate the start number but you can have any number of
sequences. The fact that they do not automatically update if you make
changes is of minor consequence. You could easily force an update e.g.
CTRL+A then F9 or by using a macro from a button on the QAT (Quick Access
Toolbar) . See  http://www.**--****.com/

1.List style/ re-start auto-numbering strategy in Word 2007

I read with interest MVP Margaret Aldisarticle, Restarting List
Auto-numbering Using a Higher Level Style, about setting up dummy paragraph
styles that are linked to a list style. The dummy paragraph becomes the
mechanism to force the following paragraph (linked to the next level of the
list style) to safely, reliably re-start its auto-number to 1 (or A, i, a,
etc.). The paragraph that follows the dummy paragraph would react to the
estart list after level 1in the list style definition.

Has anyone tried this and found it yields stable, successful auto-numbering?

I am faced with developing a template in Word 2007 that will be used across
many company departments. What I develop will be used in documents that have
many non-continuous lists. I thought the dummy paragraph would be the
cleanest, most user-friendly way to manage these non-continuous lists.

In the past, these people used the re-start numbering from the paragraph
group. Because documents are re-purposed, potential for broken numbering
increases as more and more of this re-start numbering from the paragraph
group method is used.

I want to develop the most trouble-free environment for the user to
minimize wasted time and frustration with Word auto-numbering gone awry. If
there is a smarter, simpler way for this to be done, I be keenly interested
in learning about it.

I tried this in Word 2008, and it is the same procedure except that you
should choose Insert --> Break --> "Section Break (Next Page)" and then you
can choose a new set of page numbers for the following section.

4.Page Number gallery starts numbering with 0 need to start at 1

5.Word 2007 page 1 number relative to others

Hi: My anomaly is that in some of my docs (based on a customized template)
the page # on page 1 (of a multi-page doc) will state say Page 1 of 3, when
there are many more pages in the document. The numbering corrects itself on
p.1 when the document is printed or when the footer is opened & closed. The
numbering on p.1 uses the built in Word tool (via Insert > Header & Footer >
Page Number > Current position etc.). Would appreciate some tips on what I
can do to correct this. Thanks. PLDV
