I a not sure you can so as a workaround, set your shading to white rather than 'No Fill'. Draw a rectangle the same size as your border and use Format Autoshape/Layout/Behind text to push it behind your text area and border and then move the rectangle to become your shadow in what ever diection you want it. I converted a diagram from adobe to a graphic, then inserted into Word. It displays fine in Print Preview and shows in the document however when I print, it gives the unlocatable graphic 'X' usually seen on websites when the graphic is missing. I saved the pdf diagram to both .tif & .jpg. Have tried 3 diff printer models. Have verified my Tools > Options settings - other graphics print fine. The graphic was not inserted as a link. After we installed sp3 on Office XP, on documents where any time of watermark has been inserted by Format + Background + Printed Watermark, the page takes over 5 minutes to print. We have updated the printer driver (we use HP printers and use postscript - it is not an option to not use postscript). The moment I take out the watermark, it prints fine. Any suggestions? - 4. do you mean watermarks? What version of Word are you using? In Word 2000 --- double click the image -- and in the Format Picture Dialog Box -- go to the Picture Tab and in the Image Control Section -- set the color to WATERMARK. You may also wish to go to the Layout Tab and set it BEHIND TEXT --- or Insert your Graphic in the first place in the Header/Footer layer of the document. (If you already have it in the main document -- cut then go to the Header/Footer Layer and paste). Either of those options will place your text on top of your image. If you don't mean watermark -- then what do you mean by washout? Kate in MN

Hi Debby, When you insert a picture then select it, when the picture toolbar appears one of the icons is for 'color'. Under the color icon, one of the four choices is 'washout' (in newer versions of Word). All that setting does is create a preset value under Format=>Picture=>Picture of 85% Brightness and 15% Contrast. You can use that preset for a 'speedy' way to 'fade out' a picture, but you can also use any manually selected value you choose.
