  • 2. Problem with My Documents on dual-boot XP with Live Messenger Beta
I think I've found a problem with the new Live Messenger beta. When installed on a dual-boot XP machine and sharing the My Documents folder from both installations, an error occurs when launching the XP installation on which Messenger wasn't installed. - - - - - - - - Window title: "CTicketManagerWnd: MsnMsgr.Exe - Unable To Locate Component" Error message: "This application has failed to start because sirenacm.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." - - - - - - - - The Messenger installer adds a "My Shared Folders shortcut" to the My Documents folder. This shortcut points to the System folder "My Shared Folders". Sharing the My Documents folder from another installation (without Messenger installed) causes the OS to search for "My Shared Folders", which then doesn't excist. Removing the shortcut from the My Documents folder solves this problem. I guess the same thing happens when using a Virtual Machine that's set to allow sharing the My Documents folder on the host machine.

Greetings,

Did you ever follow through any of my previous suggestions I made to you?

Here's a recall:
Audio requires a direct connection between you and your contact whereas Video in Messenger
can utilize a relay server (so Video should always work).

Are you using a router device by any chance? If so, almost every router you'll find in the
past 8 years will have support for H.323, which is why Netmeeting is working but Messenger is
not. Your router will need to support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) in order to properly
attain direct connections on MSN Messenger.

If you haven't already done so, I'd encourage you to upgrade to MSN Messenger 7 beta, as
audio support did get improved somewhat (especially for symmetric NATs):

You said you were going to go to Verizon and see what they said. Keep in mind that your DSL
modem can be setup to "act" like a router, which would stop audio conversations. You may
need to set it to "bridging" mode or turn off the built-in NAT (unfortunately there is no
"standard" for this option).

At this point, since you've faced so much frustration with this issue, I'd suggest that both
you and your contact install Skype:

and then use the audio functionality within that.
