Using Office XP upgrade CD on new computer?

Postby ZHVuc3Rlcmdpcmw » Mon, 06 Feb 2006 02:08:56 GMT

OK, I am looking at buying a new computer that will probably come loaded with
Works 8.0 and possibly a trial version of Office 2003.

I am currently running Office XP on my old computer, and all I have is an
upgrade CD because I upgraded from a previous version (and also have my
Office 2000 disks, but they were also upgrades). I'm sure I don't have
anything for whatever software I upgraded to 2000 from...

Will there be any way to install Office XP (using upgrade CD) on the new
computer when it already has newer versions installed? I can't afford both a
new computer AND a new version of Office, but I absolutely have to have
Office running if I buy a new machine.

Are there any workarounds? I'm the legitimate owner of the software, and
really want to continue using it.

Thanks for any advice.

Sorry, but you cannot install Office XP if
all you have is an upgrade version and no
older qualifying Office product to use
for eligibility. Office products newer
than Office XP are not eligible.

I can't be positive since I haven't tried using a trial version of O2003 to
validate an O2002/XP update, but I suspect that without a full version of
Office somewhere back down the chain, you're going to be out of luck.

Here are the formal rules listing products that qualify for the Office XP
upgrade:

If your new computer comes with a trial version of Office 2003, IMO you
should imediately uninstall the trial version. IMO, you should not even try
the Office 2003 trial. If you do choose to try it, when you uninstall; prior
to installing Office XP; do a search for the hidden files outlook.pst and
achive.pst. An uninstall of Office 2003 does not normally remove data files
and the Office 2003 *.pst files are not compatible with prior versions of
Outlook.

You can install your Office XP upgrade version on your new computer provided
you have a qualifying product to insert in the CD drive when asked by the
installation program. You do not need to install the qualifying product.

Your post states that you have Office 2000 upgrade CD. That CD will met the
qualifying product requirements. When my current computer was new, I did
exactly that to install Office XP upgrade even though I have the full set of
CDs back to the original full product.

Good luck

Don

May have found a workaround - has anyone done this successfully?

It appears from KB article http://www.**--****.com/
XP cannot find a qualifying product installed on the computer, you can insert
the disc for the qualifying product (I have Office 2000 Premium upgrade CDs
still on hand) in the CD drive, let the install program see it, then replace
the XP installation CD and proceed.

Will this work with my Office 2000 upgrade CDs?

Thanks for any advice - I do want to know exactly what I face if I invest in
a new machine...

Cheers,
Lelani

As you have old Office 2000 upgrade CDs, there is no problem. You don't
have to install these but have it ready to insert it in the drive when
asked. Just start with XP cds and follow the instructions.

It does not matter whether office 2000 was upgrade or not. Office XP
can also be upgrade or not.

One thing I will warn you is that if, by any chance, the CDs are OEM
versions, then you will have problems activating it as OEM cannot be
transferred on a new system. But I would try it anyway as I have
experienced in the UK that MS is quite lenient these days.

Good Luck.

Yes, that procedure will work fine.

I DO have an older qualifying product - I have Office 2000 Premium - I still
have the CDs for it! So I can I use those to force an install of XP?

Thanks,
Lelani

Thanks for all the advice - sounds as though this will work. They are not OEM
CDs (I presume by this you mean something installed on a computer when I
bought it) but the real deal purchased over the years.

Also thanks for the tips about uninstalling any trial version of Office 2003
first - I had a feeling that might be necessary.
