Well, What if you replaced the system board, but kept the Network Card, drives video card, memory, power supply and case. Is that still true?? Lost CD how to get replacement product key

Postby SGFwcHlKYWtl » Tue, 06 May 2008 03:05:00 GMT

Dell swears they sent my software, but I have nothing except the receipt and
a shipping slip, and installed software that's looking for a product key to
activate it. (Usually there is a mountain of Dell cds, books, etc)

How do I go about getting a replacement product key (for MS Office 2007
Student/Home version)? Dell said I'd have to buy new software. Although
according to Dell it's 'Retail' software, you don't get the MS certificate as
proof of ownership either, no MS box of software, and assorted stuff.

Any ideas? I'd really like to start using it.

If it was sent by Dell, ask them *where* they put this product key.

The Dell guy said it was on the CD and since it's 'retail' software they
don't keep any of that information. It sounds like it was supposed to be a
real MS CD, but I have no idea since I neverr saw it.

The other weird part was that I received no MS certificate of
authenticatioin if indeed it was 'retail' software

How long have you had the computer? If you just received it from Dell, the
best route might be to return it to Dell as a defective shipment, giving
Dell the option to send the missing software/key as an alternative to your
having to return it. I assume it's an OEM copy of Office.

I got it for Christmas so I'm pretty much out of luck there, but it's worth
a try.

Computer manufacturers often install a "trial version" of Microsoft Office.
If you are getting a prompt to type in a Product Key when opening a
Microsoft Office program, it s likely the trial period is over and you'll
need to purchase a license (product key) for Microsoft Office.

"The product key affixed to your computer is for Windows Vista (the operating system)
and not for Microsoft Office." Please review the following:

I just checked and it's a full version, not a trial. Unfortunately, I think
I've inadvertently activated word, so now the clock is ticking. Since I have
the software, and it came from Dell with it installed, I don't understandwhy
they can't give me a new key.

but for whatever reason, they won't and I'm still stuck with no key and no
software to do any reinstall. I can probably get cds, but it's the key
that's the sticking point.

The software supplied by Dell is OEM, its NOT a retail edition, Dell are
responsible for both support and supplying any keys, if indeed its not a
trial edition. Help>About in eg Word will tell you.

Dell, at least in the UK, sends copious emails with purchased specs etc when
you purchase. Surely you've not lost them all
