I have recently purchased Office XP and I truthfully like 2000 better. I never owned 2000 I ahd just used it at school and at work. I can't take the XP edition that i bought back to the store because it is not defective. Could someone please tell me if there is anyway to "Downgrade" from XP to 2000 without having to re-buy Office 2000??? Thanks Alot Terilyn Allen XXXX@XXXXX.COM
  • 5. Crashed update
Hi, I foolishly decided to update my Office 2000 Premium suite. The web analtser said I need SP1. So downloaded and applied it, putting in my original CD-ROMS as and when requested. All well and good. I suppose I should have known to leave it there. But no. I decided to download an apply the next update, which seems to be SP3. All goes along well enough. It asks for CD-ROM 1, that goes fine. Then it asks for CD-ROM 2 SP1. Well I have CD-ROM 2 but not SP1 as I downloaded the update from the web. Crash on catch 22. Does anyone know a work around for this Microsoft bug? The install / update process likes to be 'discrete'. Am I the only one in the world wondering exactly what files have been downloaded, put where, should I burn a CD with them in case I need to reinstall etc. etc?

Hi Ray,

Did you use any 'cleanup' software on your PC?
MSP files are stored in \Windows\Installer PC
for later reuse when updates are installed.
If the files are deleted you'll generally need
to update the software. See if 'detect & repair'
in the Help menu of an Office app works.

1.Office 2003 Updates Won't Install (Work Around)

2.Office 2003 update detector, administrative patch won't work

Most grateful if anyone can help me out of this bind: The online update
detector doesnt work, and I cant update with the admin patch. Next I get the
message "The Product ID number you entered has expired. You may go back and
choose another support option or enter another Product ID number" when I try
to send an email support request. Is there some way out of this maze? Why is
my ID expired? This is a properly licensed and registered installation.

3.Microsoft Word (or any other Office app) won't open after software update

Hello,

I'm having a problem with my install of MS Office 2004. (OS is Tiger
10.4.9)

When I double-click a Word (or any other MS Office doc) I get the
following error message:

"The operation could not be completed.
An unexpected error occurred (error code -10660)"

When I double-click an application icon, it bounces a couple of times,
but the application doesn't launch.

This happened after I ran an MS software update. (I think it was 11.5)

I tried un-installing MS Office 2004 using the Remove Office utility,
but the utility won't launch. None of the other Office programs launch
either - including Remote Desktop, Excel, etc. I tried dragging Libary/
Preferences to the Desktop, but that didn't help. I ran Disk Utility,
but the problem persists. I made a new user account, and that had the
same problem. This pretty much exhausts all the solutions I could find
on various newsgroups.

I would happily switch to OpenOffice or something similar, but I need
to use a bibliography management tool when I write (EndNote), and it
only works w/ MS Word, so far as I know.

Any advice on how to proceed would be much appreciated!

4.Office 2003 won't install -- two registry keys won't update

I have Dell-factory-installed Office XP and purchased Office 2003 from
Microsoft. When I try to install Office 2003, two registry keys that
apparently need updating, won't. I get a warning that I need to be an admin
(which I am...).

5.Office 2003 won't un/re-install, repair, update

I have bought a new HDD and transfered everything from my
old boot to my new one. In the process, I may have done
something wrong, and now Office2003 doesn't perform any
installation or upgrading functions. Needless to say,
Office products don't work either.

Additional info is posted below.
Thank you.

The message I get is exactly as follows:
"The patch package could not be opened. Verify that the
patch package exists and that you can access it, or
contact the application vendor to verify that this is a
valid Windows Installer patch package.

Office Update Page gives me the following error:
"Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from
previously applied Office updates are missing from the
\Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP
files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing
you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result
of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product
Support Services for assistance. "
