  • 2. $hf_mig$ FOLDER
    On my new laptop with XP Home SP2 already installed, there is a folder inside the WINDOWS directory. The folder is called $hf_mig$. Inside are a bunch of folders, one for each of the updates that were pre-installed. Are these the actual update files? Is there any point to burning them to CD? That is, could I use them to update a different computer? Do I need to keep them? Do I need to keep the $hf_mig$ folder? Thank you.

    I bought a laptop that has Works and Office 2003 Trial already on the hard drive. I'm using Works. I loaded my own Word XP and Excel 2000. I don't want Office 2003, but I don't want to destroy the files, either. I've burned them to a CD and plan to delete them from the hard drive. In the C:\ folder there is also a file called MSOCache. I clicked around -- some of the items relate to Office 2003. Can I delete this folder? It contains about 80 Megs of stuff.

    In seeking to install four of the eight recent security updates for Microsoft Office 2003, I got the following message, after four attempts: > Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB919031) > Security Update for Office 2003 (KB914455) > Security Update for Office 2003 (KB917151) > Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB918419) All had the following Error Code: > Error Code: 0x80070643 Has anyone else experienced this difficulty? I installed SP-1 and SP-2 and can no longer access any 
files in Excel or Word.  In Word I get the following 
message, "The [file name]is not available".  In Excel I 
get the following message, "Unable to read file".  I then 
ran the office update detection application and installed 
various updates (Office XP, Outlook, and Excel, including 
security packs).  None of that worked and the files still 
do not open.

Upon installing Windows XP service pack 2 and Office XP service pack 3 I am 
no longer able to mail merge a text document with a word template.  Once I 
removed Windows XP service pack 2, I was then able to continue using the mail 
merge feature.  By the way, while both service packs were installed I kept 
getting a message, "find data source".  Upon finding the data source and 
setting the delimiters, I was still prompted to find the data source again.  
Meaning I was not able to enter the main document until, I selected 
Options-then Remove Header/Record data source, but this did not fix the 
problem.  I had to reassociate the file, then save, but when it was opened 
again I was prompted to "find the data source" again.  What ever assistance

Everytime I try to upgrade to Office XP SP3 for Access 2002 runtime,
I get an (Installation unsuccesful) error.

Then I go back out to updates and it tells me that I need to install it ??? 

3.Service Pack 3 install attempt - can't open excel

I've had all kinds of crashes with Office XP over the 
past year.  I can't find my CD (I have move since 
orginally install).  So, I find a place where I can 
download an "admin" version of update - says the CD isn't 
needed.  I download and start update.  Sure enough it 
DOES ask for the CD.  I don't have it, so the install was 
cancelled.  NOW, I can not use EXCEL.  When I try to open 
Excel it starts the installer program and asks for the 
CD.  Wish I would have known that I was STILL going to 
need the CD BEFORE I started the process.  Now what?  I 
need Excel RIGHT NOW.  Thank you very much Microsoft.

4.Office 2007 Service Packs fail to install after XP Svc Pack 3 inst

On a new machine which I have just installed MS Windows XP Pro and Service 
Pack 3.  I then installed Office 2007 Professional.  However none of the 
Service Packs or updates for Office 2007 will install.  They download but 
they all fail to install. So far there are 10 or 11 of them.

5.installer cant find a file when installing Office XP service pack 2 (English ver

System allowed me to update office via the online update 
system. Installed service pack one OK but service pack 
two couldn't find D:\OFFICE.CAB - options were retry or 
cancel. retry kept being up the error 1311 - source file 
not found. 

The file in zip format is on the CD (D:\)it doesn't 
reconize it and there are no options to browse to get it. 
only thing unual is the A:\ drive looks like it is trying 
to be read.

Can anybody suggest how I can get around this problem as 
all the following updates state service pack 2 must be 
installed before installing them
