  • 2. Error 1328 applying SP3 to Office 2000 SR-1
I installed Office 2000 Small Business edition SR-1 from CDs. Now I try Office Update, and it tells me to install Service Pack 3. When I try that, I get Error 1328, complaining that c:\Config.Msi\PTC306.TMP was updated by something else. What gives, and how do I work around this? I have found notes regarding problems like this for Office XP, but I have Office 2000. Thanks in advance

ANN: Office 2000 Update - Reduce Requests for Original CDs

Microsoft has released English and Japanese versions of an update for Office
2000. Installing this update will allow Office 2000 users to install 'full
file' patches for that release without inserting the CD. There may still be
a few cases in which the source is needed, but testing shows that it handles
the majority of the scenarios.

To take advantage of this feature, the system will need to be at the Office
2000 SR1 level, and Windows Installer 2.0 must be installed.

The details are covered in

provides links to the downloads.

4.Office 2000 full-file patches requesting original installation med

We are constantly having problems pushing out "full file" updates to our end
users. Our policy does not allow us to put the Office installation files on
the hard drive of our PCs, and we have been unsuccessful at pointing them to
the server during the update process to obtain the appropriate MSI when
installing an office update. We have over 10,000 computers, and every time
we push the latest office update, it breaks Excel and/or Word. I need a way
to successfully push these updates without requiring access to the original
installation media. An administrative installation point is out of the
question because we have many remote sites that would have too slow of a
connection to the server. Any suggestions are welcome, I'm pulling my hair
out here!
