Samsung i730 security software like PDA_Defense ?
by ThereIsNoTry » Sun, 10 Jul 2005 04:10:49 GMT
Hello All:
Are there any current known-good recommendations for securing the Samsung
i730 similar to PDA-Defense?
I'm hoping to find software that can
-lock the handheld after X minutes of not being used
-allow phonecalls to be received during lock out
-lock the handheld on demand
-erase the data contents of the unit after X days of not being synced
-erase the data contents after X number of failed password attempts
It would also be helpful to:
-be able to encrypt individual databases
-allow calls to be sent even in locked mode
I've done a fairly good search and, while there are some products few work
well with the phone functions. I know this from experience because even
PDA_Defense worked sporadically with my Kyocera 7135 and that after several
software revisions.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

You can have a look at Credant (www.credant.com), it's quite good for
locking down devices.

Hello Mauricio:
Thanks for the links. I sent messages to Cendant and BlueFireSecurity to
see if their products might be what I'm looking for.
The process is really kind of a pain because there are always so many
software issues between any add-on utility and the phone-featured PDA's. I
know this from long hard experience. I wish MS would come up with direct
OS hooks for security or build in a high-level directly for these devices so
that the process wouldn't be so hit and miss.

Microsoft is coming with something. The "Messaging and Security Feature Pack
for Windows Mobile" will work on Windows Mobile 5 and up, with Exchange
Server 2003 SP2 and up. Read this article for updates coming with this
software release:

racias Mauricio!
That's very promising news. Thanks for the link.
That sounds like more of what I'm looking for - as long as the key features
aren't tied to an enterprise solution. You don't need to be an Exchange or
corporate network user to need significant security for your PDA.

Thanks for the link. Looks good but it seems as if it's another enterprise
product. I need something for a single device that's not linked to a
corporate network.

2.Problem connect Samsung i730 - USB Issue
Why would my pocket pc phone work through my Belkin 4 Port USB Hub, but not
be recognized when directly connected to my pc. I would like to upgrade to
WM5. The installation requires that the device be connected directly to the
computer.
I tried removing the unknow device via device manager, but still does not
recognize when I reconnect. If I put back into the USB hub, then all is
grand. I also tried putting the USB chord in the port that was being used by
the 4 port hub, and no dice.
Thanks!

3.VPN to Exchange on Samsung I730
I just spent 4 hours on Samsung tech support to have them tell me that I
can't simultaneously access my company exchange server through my company
VPN. I can make the VPN connection work but if fails when trying to sync with
exchange.
I am using Active Sync 3.8 and I connect to my company VPN through the
Microsoft network connection manager on my notebook using PPTP. The Exchange
server is version 5.5 SP5. When I am on the road, I can access mail from the
OWA client.
I had my old Blackberry set up to sync mail from the OWA client and it
worked well without my intervention. Seems like better (more expensive!)
phone and software ought to be able to do the same thing. Thanks for any help
you may provide.
