Everytime when dragging a file (doc/xls) from sharepoint (explorer view) to Briefcase, that file always becomes an orphan and this happens only on a Windows 2000 platform. Does anyone know a way to get around it? Thanks
  • 2. SPS 2003 - Corporate Portal Setup
I have read Microsoft's Accelerator documentation where it mentions creating divisional portals off of the corporate portal. Is this a good architectural choice? Will this setup provide efficient performance since they all use the same virtual server and application pool? If I have different business units that need access to their own content sources would this be a good way to set these up as child portals? Or should they be setup as separate portals with separate virtual servers and application pools? These would be setup on a medium SPS 2003 server farm. Thanks in advance for any suggestions regarding these questions. -- WG
  • 3. Performace issues of stroring documents (binary data) in doc libs
I've always understood it to be a bad idea to store files (ie binary data) in MS SQL tables. The best practice guides say to store links to the file which resides on the file system. How has SPS gotten around this? From the posts I've read, it doesn't seem to be a concern to anyone. Is this true? Thanks Eric

Out of the box installation shows Home and area
navigation as opposed to Topic navigation. How can I get
the Topic navigation to appear?

I'm thinking you've not installed SPS, just WSS? Topics are unique to SPS,
AIUI.

I didn't do the installation, but we only had portal on
version 1 and am thinking the person who did the install
was concentrating on portal. There is another portal that
was subsequently created, that does have Topics. This has
all the other portal lists such as news and sites.

Is there a way to get topics back in?

Thank you.

1.Link to discussion board in Topics subarea into Home page

Hi all,

I have a discussion board in one of the subareas in the Topics area
which i wish to display on the Home page itself.

For example, the discussion board is in Topics -> Staff Discussion
I wish to link the above discussion board in Home so that users can
see the discussion threads in Topics -> Staff Discussion.

Is there any way which I can achieve the above?

Thanks in advance!

2.How 2 remove "Topics" on left menu of Home Page & Show "Locations"

I have hidden the Topics area, so the "Topics" menu on Home Page is now
useless.

How can I remove this "Topics" menu and instead replace it with "Locations"
menu, which comes on all other pages?

3.Search Page as the Portal Home Page

On the portal that I'm working on, we're going for a simplistic style
home page ala Google (Simple Search on the Home Page). These are the
following steps that I have made to attempt this so far:

1. Bring up the Page Editing Toolbar
2. Under the "Page" drop-down (in the displayed Page Editing Toolbar)
select Page Settings
3. Change the Page Layout to "(Welcome Page) Search Page"

When I go back to the page, sure enough the page layout has changed to
more of a search page, but I get an error message at the top of the
page stating: "This control depends on a Tabs list for its
configuration, and is designed to work within an appropriate site
template. To remove this control, edit the layout page. "

So I did a little digging, and I discovered that there is such thing
as a "Tabs" list - but I can only seem to create it if it is off of a
page in the Search Center. I've even tried to save the Tabs list as a
template, but I don't get the option of creating this list under any
other page other than the original search page. To duplicate my
results, go to your Search Page (not the home page that we changed to
the Search Page layout) and choose View All Site Content under Site
Actions. Under that, choose Create and you should see a list under
"Custom Lists" called "Tabs List." Do the same for your home page,
and you won't see this list there.

So I guess my big picture question is: What is the best way to set up
your home page as a search page?

Other questions that I had along the way:

1. Why can't I create a Tabs list off my root site collection?
2. What drives the list of Page Layouts when I modify the page layout
of a page?

Thanks!

4.Filtered list on portal home page

Hello,

I've created a custom list on an area within my portal
(2003). One of the columns on this list is 'current'.
I'd now like to take those items filtered with 'current'
and add those to a list on the portal home page. What
would be the easiest way of doing this - FP2K3 or creating
a new webpart?

Thanks.
