  • 2. ADOMD problem...Object is no longer valid exception.
Hi, We have a .NET application that uses ADOMD to query a MS analysis OLAP cube. In a typical query, we get data for about 3 dimensions (800 x 15 x 2 entities) and then iterate over the resulting cell set to extract information. Occasionally, we see "Object is no longer valid" exceptions being thrown. The object (whose access usually throws this error) is of the type "ADOMD.Position". Sometimes the error appears while executing Cell.Get_Item(). We have a mechanism to retry the query if these exceptions are thrown in a (vain) hope that on the retry the whole thing will go off successfully. This works sometimes, but not always, so this isn't satisfactory. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening? Is this something to do with garbage collection? Or is it because ADOMD is an unmanaged component ? Should we make a switch to ADOMD .NET in that case. Also is ADOMD.NET still in beta ?? Are there any workarounds/fixes? I would be grateful to know. Thanks in advance, Arun.
  • 3. Novice MDX Question
I am trying to write a query that will filter based on two members of the same dimension. Getting "duplicate dimensions accross independent axis" error when I try the query below. Any suggestions greatly appreciated: SELECT NON EMPTY {[Credited Card].[Standard].[All Credited Cards]} ON ROWS, NON EMPTY {[Measures].[Amount]} ON COLUMNS FROM [CreditCards] WHERE ( [Transaction Type].[Standard].[Transaction Type].[Pay], [Transaction Type].[Standard].[Transaction Type].[Charge] )

Hi, Is it possible to not show the scorecard indicator (traffic light), if there are no targets value specified for a given record in a cube? KPI's target value source is cube's measure Thanks in advance

Inviting suggestions for Measures

Postby yashgt » Sat, 13 Nov 2004 19:34:59 GMT

We have a column, SETUP_TIME varchar[20] in the fact table in SQL
Server 2000. This has values like '01:20:30.900', '03:30.800', etc.
The hour and minute parts are present only if they are non-zero. We
would like to create measures, in an OLAP cube in AS 2000, Total setup
time and Mean setup time, and would like to display them in the same
format as 'HH:MM:SS.FFF' with time components shown only if they are
Can someone suggest how this can be done?

This link discusses FORMAT_STRING options for cube measures, but there
is no mention of milliseconds:

This earlier post shows how to format hh:mm:ss

Try the following format, if time is < 32K seconds:

With Member [Measures].[FormattedASA] as
 FORMAT_STRING = 'hh:nn:ss'

1.Inviting cube design suggestions

Here is a cube design problem.
In the data file we have a field named SERVICE which is a colon
separated list of transport modes. The value in this column looks like
"Bus:Road:Rail", "Road:Rail", etc.
We intend to use a dimension table named DIM_SERVICE[ ID, SERVICE], so
that we can obtain measures such as number of times a service has been
used, etc. Hence single record from the file can contribute to a
measure for more than one members of a dimension.
To build a cube, we would like to enrich the data file and add foreign
key columns before loading the enriched file in a fact table.
The number of transport modes can be a lot. Also there will be more
dimensions like these. Hence we want to avoid creating a column for
every distinct transport mode.
We cannot do anything to change the format of the incoming data files.

Can someone suggest how we should achieve this? We use MS OLAP 2000.

5.Using a Calculated Measure to Emulate a Text Measure

I'm trying to create a measure that will return either an error
message or when aggregated, show the number of errors. I first
created an Error Count measure that does a simple sum of the errors.
Then I created a calculated measure that basically consits of an iif
that returns the count if the count is > 1 or "some text" if the count
is 1. The problem I'm having is how to actually refer to the error
text ("some text" is currently a placeholder) in that statement. The
source column for the Error Count measure is an errorTypeId column
which links to an ErrorType table that contains the description that I
want to show. I was thinking of somehow creating a dimension off of
the ErrorType table and then getting the appropriate member back by
using the ErrorTypeId that is being used for the Error Count measure.
But I haven't been able to get anything to work so far. Does anyone
have any ideas?
