MDX Releated Question

  • 1. Transferring usage statistics to test cube
    I have a production cube with about 300 aggregations on 33 million data rows which takes about 15 hours to reprocess. Usage Based Optimization only finds about a dozen queries to optimize for (queries executed more than once) so I suspect I'm really over-aggregated. I'd like to replace the current aggregations with the ones recommended by the usage based optiization, but want to try it on a test copy of the cube first. How can I do this? The test copy has no history to base optimization on. Is there some way to "fake" the usage history for the test cube, or some way to capture the aggregation recommendations from prod without applying them?
  • 2. Different Aggregations along different dimensions
    I am trying to create a cube where one of the measures is "summed" across 2 of the six available dimensions, BUT is "averaged" accross the other 4 dimensions... Can anyone suggest a formula or strategy to create this measure??
  • 3. Can not get the Sum ParallelPeriod to work
    I have tried multiple version of Sum(ParallelPeriod) , so that if I select Q2 2005, I will get the sum(from Q1 and Q2 2004), of if I Select Feb 2005, I will get the sum of January and Feb 2004. Please help. I tried sum(PeriodsToDate([Time].[Year],[Time].Currentmember.PrevMember), [Measures].[Actual Revenue]) but it gives me the wrong sum in the Q1, but the correct in Q2 thru Q4 for the Previous Year. thank you

Select statements in MDX are quite different than their SQL counterparts.
The 'Where' clause is also quite different.

If you provide specifics as to the query you're trying to write, it would be
easier to help you.

1.Question about using format in MDX - for MDX experts

First, I know I have my basics wrong here so let me first give a
background. Please ignore this stupid part :)

1,000,000 = 100 Thousand. Right?
10,000,000 = 1 Million. Right?
100,000,000 = 1 Billion. Right?

Please help me clear up my understanding if the above is wrong and again
I know this is a very silly question. I know that the question below
could have been phrased much clearer if my basic concept about the #'s
was correct :( so please bear with me and guide me where you can...

I want to use the format function in MDX in such a manner that if the
maximum sales is 10 Thousand then the measure total should be shown in
Thousands e.g. 0.5 T, 1.2 T, 3 T, and so on

if the maximum sales is 1 Million then the measure total should be shown
in Millions e.g. 0.12 M, 0,5 M, 4 M and so on

Many thanks in advance for your help.

3.Basic MDX question

I understand the very basics of MDX. I know how to, for example, get
some set of measures as columns with some dimension on the Rows.
However, I need to do something more complex and I just can't get my
head around it.

What I'm trying to do is compare some given measure for various periods.

For example, say you have a measure [Sales] and a dimenion called
[Company Regions], the query to get the sales numbers for the company
regions basically looks like this:

with member [Date Dim].[Date Range] as
    'Aggregate( {[Date Dim].[2004].[M05]:[Date Dim].[2004].[M06]}'
select [Measures].[Sales] ON COLUMNS,
   Descendants([Company Regions], [Lowest Level], SELF_AND_BEFORE)
from myCube
where ([Date Dim].[Date Range])

That gives me the sales numbers for the months May and June.

What I need to do is that same basic query but I want to compare the
Date Range with last year. I just can't grasp how to make it show up in
the columns. I've read about cousin() and parallelperiods() but all the
examples return the period itself, not some measure in that period.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

4.SSAS 2005 - MDX Question

I'm new to Analysis Services, and had a basic MDX Question. Here's
the (simplified) structure of my cube:

1 Fact - Pendings
	* Count
	* Offer ID

1 Dimension - Offer
	* Offer
		- Offer A
		- Offer B
		- Offer C

	I want to create a calculated member so that I can always view 'Offer
A' in the browser alongside all offers (Count of Pendings w/o any
filters). Should I be using the 'Scope' keyword? Here's what I have
thus far as my calculated member:

 AS [Measures].[Count],
Scope ([Dim Offer].[Offer Label].&[Offer A],[Measures].[Count]);
This = [Measures].[Count];
End Scope;

Let me know if what I'm doing at least makes some sense, or if theres
some other way I should be going about this.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong with the
