Another "quirk" I thought I'd mention. Recently, I had to rebuild a cluster node in a cluster running an instance of SQL 2005 (RTM). Overall, it was straightforward and what I expected. Except for one "gotcha". I use PAE and 32 bit SQL 2005. When I reinstalled the SQL server on the second node, using the documented procedure, everything went good (on first look) except SQL Agent. SQL Agent would start up, and shortly later die. Event log messages indicated SQL Agent was running as a user that wasn't a member of the sysadmin server role. The event log messages were wrong (user was explicitly named as having sysadmin rights and was also a member of the local admin group on the computer). So were the SQL error log messages that indicated that Agent XPs were not enabled (they were). The fix was relatively simple, and certainly was needed (why only Agent had problems is beyond me though). Because I'm using PAE, the server needs "Lock Pages in Memory" permission. Apparently the SQL server setup program that installs SQL onto other nodes (during a node rebuild scenario, for instance) doesn't do this. Manually granting that permission to engine user and Agent user seemed to fix this, and Agent runs fine now.
  • 4. Help Please SQL 2000 Client Tools
I removed SQL2005 and then had to install the Client Tools only and re apply SP4. Then I was able to bring SQL 2000 snap in Enterprise Manager up. Well something went wrong and they had me remove SQL2005 again. Now I can't re-install the client tools. Error: Setup has detected an existing client tools only installation. Please use the maintenance mode to add client components. Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!

Your post is not exactly clear. What are you trying to do?

You can "test" SQL Server authentication by creating a (SQL) user via
sp_addlogin.
sp_grantlogin allows you to create a Windows Authentication login.

4.Check Setup And Change DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS

I am working on a server which has MSDE installed, but currently we
cannot connect to this instance using Enterprise Manager, and I'm
trying to establish whether it's because DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=1 or
if it might be a firewall issue. I am trying to find out how to do two
things:

1. How can I check the setup of an Instance of MSDE ? I need to find
out if DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS = 0 or 1 ?

2. How can I change the setting if it is wrong?

Thanks!

5.DDL Change from Setup

Hi NG,

we have an 2k5 Enterprise (7x24) 1TB in simple TransactRepl.
Anytime ddl changes comes not as sql script. There is a setup.exe
makes the ddl changes (drop table, new table, alter column, alter
table, new views ..).
Is there a "automatic" way without drop the whole subscription,
alter the publication (add new tables, views ..) and apply new
snapshot?

Thanks
