1.Possible to add newer glibc as supplemental library?

I'm running a linux system that is a few years old, based on glibc
2.1. (Original kernel was 2.2.x series, but I have been using 2.4.x
for some time now with no problems.) Unfortunately I've been finding
that many new apps will no longer run with this version of glibc.

I know that doing a major glibc upgrade is an almost impossibly
complex and dangerous task. But is it feasible to add a newer glibc as
an additional library? I've read the glibc2 HOW-TO and it contains
instructions for adding a "test" glibc which seems to essentially do
this. Detailed instructions are given for dealing with include files
and linking when compiling source code with the test library. However,
this document is several years old (dated June 1998).

So is this possible? If so, is can the system be configured so
precompiled binaries will find and use the additional library, or
would it only be good for building from source?

(Actually I expect the real answer will be "bite the bullet and
upgrade the entire OS," but wanted to check out this possibility
first...)

2.Supplemental != Companion?

Hi , just in the middle of a Sol9 install and it wants the Supplemental CD.
I just have the "install" ,"CD1", "CD2" & "lang" CDs downloaded.

I can find references to a Solaris 9 supplemental CD but no downloads.

I can find the Companion CD but I suspect this is something different?

It looks like the install process wont let me skip the supplemental CD so
I'm stuck at the mo. I'm currently downloading the Sol9 companion CD just
in case that is what is needed. But if anyone can shed anylight on my
confusion.. or my inability to find a download called "Solaris 9
Supplemental Software CD"..

3.Supplemental Kernel Patch vs. Generic Kernel

Got a new server, an E280R, with Solaris8 and with kernel 114018-01 ( instead of the usual 108528-xx ).
Looking at SunSolve, 114018 is Supplemental Kernel Update Patch for 108528-18.
I want to apply the latest kernel, or latest cluster / recommended patch for Solaris8.

However, it mentioned that for 114018-01:
Patches which conflict with this patch: 108528-19 (or newer)

How would one go about this if installing the latest kernel would conflict with the existing one ?

4.Trouble with logging iptables LOG into a .log file

I am a system administrator in a middle school and a linux
enthusisastic newbie and have just installed a RH9 box as Default
Gateway using iptables as firewall.

Recently students started finding MSN replicas and are using them. It
is a school policy not to allow MSN and I need to stop it. I can find
the exe files of MSN easy enough but need to close the MSN traffic on
user level and that means the firewall.

I understand that closing the port 1863 (MSN) is to no awail since MSN
is smart enough to find other ports like 80 to connect. So I need to
sniff out the hosts of MSN for IP blocking and am trying to do so with
these

iptables rules:

At first, after making the LOG rule I could not find the log file for
iptables, then after some reading, curtesy of Google, I made these
adjustments to syslog.conf (bottom entry) after creating the file
/var/log/iptables.log.

Nothing happens! Not with kern.warning nor with the commented line
with #*.info;kern etc. uncommented.

How do I get iptables to log into the /var/log/iptables.log file when
the LOG rule is activated?

BTW the file iptables.log contains the same text as /var/log/messages
and I just don't seem to find these info by Google.

I'm in dire need for some help here folks.
