  • 1. Typing on qwerty [Was: So what replaces the Sun Java Desktop System product line?
On May 30, 9:57 am, "Richard B. Gilbert" < XXXX@XXXXX.COM > wrote: > > Do YOU want to learn to touch type all over again? Nope. But I surely don't have any idea why my 17 year old is being taught to type on QWERTY keyboards when we don't even have a typewriter in the house or the school. using the argument that things like this get taught because of the people who were already taught would have stopped every technical advance in the world. Who wants to learn to use touch tone telephones when everyone already knew how to use dial? Who wants to learn to use an MP3 player when everyone already knew how to use vinyl or cassettes or CDs? And so forth. Certainly there are people who already know how to do things. The way progress tends to work in other fields is that something better comes along and then manufacturers start the phase out of the old technology. Go try and find cassettes, VHS, and vinyl music today - it's out there, but rare to find. Regular DVDs are going to quickly go through the same phase out in favor of Blu-Ray. Automobiles resulted in the phase out of commonly accessible blacksmiths and horse drawn carriages. Often something requires training, like QWERTY, then the process is to teach the teachers, provide the schools with the next phase of technology, then let things ripple out from there.
  • 2. wpi0 driver opensolaris
Has anyone managed to get the Intel 3945 wireless chipset to work reliably with opensolaris? Holy shit is it frustrating. It works for a while, then wont connect. Then it works for 5 mins. Then it wont connect. Is there anything I can do to make wireless actually work? Sometimes I get connectivity when I type pfexec svcadm restart nwam. But often it does nothing. I have also tried disabling nwam and using the Network preference but it is just as flaky. Wired ethernet doesn't work at all. I really want to like this OS. I really want to learn it and use it a lot. But without the internet it isn't good for much.

  • 4. Device files realted to DLPI interface
SunOS 5.10 ------ From man 7p dlpi for HP-UX ------ Device File Format To access LAN drivers via DLPI interface, DLS users must use the following device files: Name Type Major # Minor # Access Type -------- ---- ------- ------- ----------- /dev/dlpi c 72 0x77 Clone access /dev/dlpiX c 119 0xX Non-Clone access ------------------------------------------------------- So, man 7p for HP-UX contain informations of names of device files related to DLPI interface. man 7p for Sun doesn't contain information of names of device files related to DLPI interface. How to know names of these files for Sun? Thanks, Alex Vinokur

Note for Solaris on x86:
If you have a problem, please make sure you do *NOT* have
LD_LIBRARY_PATH set in your environment. These packages are built to
run in a pure Sun environment. You will need to have the Companion CD
for Solaris 8 installed to use the proper libraries on Solaris 8 only.
Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 do not need any libraries or additional
packages install on the system.

If you have problems, please contact the responsible person(s) in the
README file. Since there have been various builds for each platform,
please check that you have the proper README for the respective
distribution you download.

3.Thunderbird 1.5.0.2 on Mozilla.org?

Just a short query...

Anyone got an idea why the latest version of TB isn't mentioned on the
website as for Firefox?

You can get it from the releases directory via ftp and doesn't seem to
be a beta either. Does it have some issues that mozilla are
investigating before a full release or what?
