I dont know whats going on but sys-config is a nightmare on the reboot after it runs. It looks like the setup is fighting with the normal bootup procedure cos there are multiple bypass login messages, ands multiple console logon failure messages. The setup does not seem to like any keypresses, but I think I have got around it by pressing many keys until the computer beeps, and then I know the setup program will accept the key entries for that setup screen only. When the setup screen moves on by pressing Esc 2, I have to do the same again. Really frustrating to say the least. Does anyone know what's going on, and how to stop it so that the setup works ok? Thanks.

Anyone recommend an HTML editor to run under Sol10/SPARC/Gnome? I usually just edit the HTML directly with a text editor, but the documents I want to deal with have lots of tables (and tables within tables) which are a nightmare to edit by hand. I've used Amaya in the past, but can't find a SPARC binary anywhere, and Bluefish, but the package I have is for a very old version. -- "Religion poisons everything." • 3. hierarchical automount setup???
I'm looking for some documentation on how to set up a hierarchical automount. I'm not even sure if that is the correct term for what I want to do. We're running a Solaris 8/9 environment. On my clients, we need to be able to cd to: /remote/boston /remote/nyc /remote/phila On the NIS master, I assume we would have maps such as: auto.boston auto.nyc auto.phila Auto.boston might contain: user1 server:/vol/vol1/home/& user2 server:/vol/vol1/home/& I also assume that I'll have an auto.remote map. How should auto.remote be set up? What about the auto.master? Anything else that I am missing? Thanks, Mark

boot sun fire v100 from an external USB cd/dvd

Postby gregt » Sun, 31 Oct 2004 10:33:36 GMT

I found bunch of posts but really none of them seemed to have said if
it's possible, and if so how.

I am trying to install a v100 from a DVD rom, but sonce the box comes
with cd only and no scsi, I am trying to figure it out.
Yes, I know I can install from cd, or boot of the network.. my point
is judt somply knowing if I can do it from USB attached CD/DVD.
(It's an ide cdrom put into an external usb2/firewire case).

Of course I cannot see it in probe-scsi or ide, or any other (sifting
usb did not show anythng to probe all usb), however it shows just fine
when I boot into the OS (Sol9) (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0 - as opposed to c0 for
internals).

I tried booting off of /pci@1f,0/usb@a/storage@1:0
The way I got this path was playing between devalias and ls...

Well.. it is not working.

I even tried to dd the dvd to c1t2d0s0 (or s2) to see if then I could
trick the os to think it was a CD.. well. sure enough this did not
work...

So I am back to trying USB.. any ideas/suggestions would be greatly
appreciated...
it just does not seem it should ba quite that hard, but of couse SUN
does not support it so I am on my own and hate not knowing how to do
it.

Thx in advance for any ideas.

Thx Chris,

Well.. that would be an option; I was just hoping for a simpler one
[as far as hardware].. it's not like I cannot just install from cd or
setup a network install server, but.. I wanted to know if there are
any tricks for USB.. it really seems like the OS is needed... oh! I
just had an idea.. I wonder if once I startup from CD then maybe it
will let me choose dvd media for install.....

Well, we'll see...

If anyone has any info as to actually booting usb device from obp, let
me know :) Elese I'll just consider that SUN cannot do it... hmm...

Thx.
