  • 1. c++ compilation slow on solaris using forte 6.1
Hi, I have a program which heavily uses templates. I am using forte 6.1 compiler. My prblem is that compilation is very slow on solaris. If i compile the same program with MS Visual studio 6.0, it compiles very fast. I tried using "-instance=explicit" option of forte compiler. This did compilation relatively faster but gave me problem in linking like "duplicate definition or declaration". I have to change the source code to remove these errors which compiles perfectly otherwise. I thought of precompiled header also as option but this is not supported in forte6.1. Do anyone of you have idea how can compile my code faster with minimal code changes. One more observation : All this slowness is because of templates instantiation which creates "Templates_DB" and i guess SunWS_Cache also. Is there anyway to avoid these. I dont understand how "MS Visual studio 6.0" is compiling the same code faster ! ! ! If this is not correct newsgroup for this question, please tell me the correct one. Thanks a lot, Dinesh
  • 2. tape command for solaris 8
Is there a unix command 1. to label a tape? write "tape1", "tape2", etc to the tape. 2. to tell whether a tape is blank (no data)? 3. to tell a tape is write-protected? 4. to tell a tape drive is empty (no tape is inserted)? 5. What is the difference between tar and ufsdump?
  • 3. setting up a RAM disk
Hi, We have a Sun-Fire running SunOS 5.8. I'd like to set up a RAM disk, or a file partition that resides in RAM. I want to put an application into RAM along with its attendant data files, run it for a few cases, and see what improvement there is by having it reside in memory. How does one set up a RAM disk? thanks, matthew
  • 4. Compare Login against Regular Expressions using regexec, regcomp
Hi, I have a C program that checks logins before an account can be created or a login can be changed. I am using regexec, regcomp to verify the logins. Currently I have a file that I read in as input with a list of restricted logins. For example, an user is not allowed to have a login with a * in the login name or a & in the login name. The program then loops through the list checking it against the login. However, I am having trouble with the \ character. Currently, the user can create a login with the \ as one of the characters. Could some please tell me what entry I would have to put im my file that would restrict users from creating login with the \ as one of the characters. Thanks Kent
  • 5. Solaris: Shutting down one system generates messages on all systems: Why/how to turn off?
Solaris: Shutting down one system generates messages on all systems: Why/how to turn off? When one machine in our network executes the shutdown command, messages are displayed on all the machines saying the machine is about to be rebooted (which is not true on those other machines). I'm guessing that this is caused by the fact that the other machines have NFS-mounted drives on the machine that is going down. Is this right? And, is there a way to turn this "feature" off?

boot sun fire v100 from an external USB cd/dvd

Postby gregt » Sun, 31 Oct 2004 10:33:36 GMT

I found bunch of posts but really none of them seemed to have said if
it's possible, and if so how.

I am trying to install a v100 from a DVD rom, but sonce the box comes
with cd only and no scsi, I am trying to figure it out.
Yes, I know I can install from cd, or boot of the network.. my point
is judt somply knowing if I can do it from USB attached CD/DVD.
(It's an ide cdrom put into an external usb2/firewire case).

Of course I cannot see it in probe-scsi or ide, or any other (sifting
usb did not show anythng to probe all usb), however it shows just fine
when I boot into the OS (Sol9) (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0 - as opposed to c0 for
internals).

I tried booting off of /pci@1f,0/usb@a/storage@1:0
The way I got this path was playing between devalias and ls...

Well.. it is not working.

I even tried to dd the dvd to c1t2d0s0 (or s2) to see if then I could
trick the os to think it was a CD.. well. sure enough this did not
work...

So I am back to trying USB.. any ideas/suggestions would be greatly
appreciated...
it just does not seem it should ba quite that hard, but of couse SUN
does not support it so I am on my own and hate not knowing how to do
it.

Thx in advance for any ideas.

Thx Chris,

Well.. that would be an option; I was just hoping for a simpler one
[as far as hardware].. it's not like I cannot just install from cd or
setup a network install server, but.. I wanted to know if there are
any tricks for USB.. it really seems like the OS is needed... oh! I
just had an idea.. I wonder if once I startup from CD then maybe it
will let me choose dvd media for install.....

Well, we'll see...

If anyone has any info as to actually booting usb device from obp, let
me know :) Elese I'll just consider that SUN cannot do it... hmm...

Thx.
