  • 1. Bigger than 128GB disks in a netra X1
I know that netra X1s (and other machines with the same IDE chipset I guess) can only handle 128GB disks. If I put somewhat bigger disks in it, will it fail altogether, or only see the first 128GB? Basically, I want to install the largest disks I can, but the ones I can easily get locally are 160GB. I can get 120s easily enough, but I'm lazy so I thought I'd ask. Thanks --tim

default locale setting

Postby Tor Andersen » Sat, 06 Mar 2004 17:35:42 GMT

I'm trying to setup a Solaris SunOS 5.8 Generic_108528-03 to use Unicode
UTF-8 as default locale.

I've changed the settings in /etc/TIMEZONE, setting the following
environment variables to en_US.UTF-8.

After running init 6, the CDE login appears as normal.
However, after logging in, nothing happens, except that the screen goes
black after about 5 minutes. There are not error indications in
$home/.dt/startlog, the last message being that Xsession has started.

What could be wrong here ?
I would appreciate answers or clues, preferrably to the group.

1.Failed to set default locale

I got some problems localizing my quite fresh FreeBSD 5.3 installation. I
followed the instructions given in the FreeBSD Handbook and now my X11
applications appear in German, but the console doesn't seem to be affected
at all. Additionally I get numerous error messages like "Failed to set
default locale" when installing software. Installing fluxbox, for example,
looks like this:

su-3.00# pkg_add -r fluxbox
Fetching \\
	ase/Latest/fluxbox.tbz...(null): Failed to
set default locale
Fetching \\
oxtools-0.65.0.tbz...(null): Failed to set default locale
(null): (null): Failed to set default localeFailed to set default locale

(null): (null): Failed to set default locale
Failed to set default locale

An "echo $LANG" on the console gives me "de_DE", "echo $LC_ALL" doesn't
return anything at all. The handbook says setting only LANG doesn't matter
since it's used synonymously.
I searched the net a lot, but only found one post which wasn't even
answered. I contacted the writer, but he hasn't found a solution yet

2.Wrong default locale in Solaris 10

I recently installed Solaris 10 b58 on an Ultra 2, and noticed that
the default locale was `C'. I'm using the same sysidcfg file as for
Solaris 9. It says `system_locale=en_CA'. The locale.byname NIS
map also specifies `en_CA'.

This all works on Solaris 9, resulting in the default locale
`en_CA.ISO8859-1'. This value is also listed in /etc/default/init on
Solaris 9.

On Solaris 10, the locale is `C', for both rlogin and CDE/Gnome
sessions, and /etc/default/init contains no `LC_' variables. How do
set the default locale for Solaris 10?

3.Solaris 10 b72 default locale

I am trying to migrate our custom jumpstart installation to Solaris 10
and seem to have some problem with the installation of locales. I set
the system_locale in the syidcfg file to en_US and for Solaris 8 and 9
this was sufficient to install the en_US locales plus some other North
American ones. In Solaris 10 the only locales which are installed on
the system are C, POSIX, and iso_8859_1 but none of the en_US. Is this
a bug or changed behaviour? Do I need to specify the locale in the
jumpstart installation file in order to get these locales installed
during the jumpstart process?

The configuration is a full (cluster SUNWCXall) installation of
Solaris 10 b72 which is loaded from an install server running under
Solaris 9.
