  • 1. Solaris 8 Network Config
I can't get my Solaris machine out on the net. We run 3 different class C addresses and our gateway is on another class C address what file do I need to configure so it can see the other subnet (class C address)? Also I was looking and I am supposed to have a defaultrouter (for gateway) and resolv.conf (for DNS) in my ETC directory. I do not have these files. Do I need to just create them then put in the values or is there a configuration I can run through to do this? Any help would be appreciated. The name of the network card is iprb0 (incase you need it) thanks. Ryan Tremblay XXXX@XXXXX.COM
  • 2. disaster recovery of nis master server
Hi, I'm in the process of practicing a disaster recovery of the nis master server. I will build the new server with the same specs as the original nis master server. I have created dumps of the original server which I will use to create the new master server. Once I import the dump to the new master server and reboot, will that cause any problems with the existing master nis server still in production, or does anybody know of a better way to do this? doggy
  • 3. RAID 1 mirroring
Hello, I have a Sun system running Solaris 9. It has two 36 Gb scsi disks in it; c0t0d0 and c0t1d0. I have installed the O/S to c0t0d0. I'd like to mirror these disks (RAID 1) using Solaris Volume Manager. Can someone tell the simplest (no frills) method, and commands to achieve this? Thank you.

  • 5. SPARC 10 disk replacement
Hey folks, I have a SPARCServer 10 with a 1Gb drive. I have a 9.1 Gb SCSI drive and Solaris 8 media and would like to replace the drive and install Sol 8 on it. Is there a FAQ listing on best practices on this? Is it as simple as booting the Solaris installation disk and following the steps like in an x86 machine or is there different steps to prepare a new disk? If there is a FAQ listing covering this, I couldn't find it and most books gloss over this and one even said that most sys admins prepare the disk in another system and then install it into the new server which doesn't sound right. Thanks.

Booting Netra X1

Postby Sean » Wed, 30 Nov 2005 02:21:31 GMT

Hi everybody,

I am a newbie to Sun systems. I recently got a Sun Netra X1 server. I
didn't come with any harddrives so I installed my own in it. I want to
install BSD on the server. I've got instructions online about booting
to a cdrom. However whenever I type the command 'boot cdrom' I
received the message 'command not recongized' I can list all the
commands at the 'lom>' prompt and 'boot' is not listed, only 'bootmode'
Also if I type the command 'poweron' the server starts up and does
nothing else. I don't know if this server is broken or not. Could
someone help me with booting this server? Thanks.

You're in the LOM. You need to switch to the OBP to use that command.

See the discussion of the break command at page 45 of:

Given that you're new to Sun HW, I strongly suggest that you install SOlaris
on this server.

Right; boot only works from the OBP (ok prompt), not ALOM, which is where
you are. To connect to the console, issue the "console -f" command.

1.Booting Netra X1 from external USB CD-ROM device

Hi,
I'm planning to purchase Netra X1 from Ebay. Since X1's don't have CD-ROM I
was wondering if it's possible to boot Netra X1 from external USB CD-ROM and
install Solaris from scratch. I've never done solaris install over
network/jumpstart so I don't feel like experimenting now to do it.
I wan't to buy 1RU server for network monitoring programs: netflow, mrtg,
maybe snort for a small network installation. Is there another Sun server in
that price class that would be better suited for purpose ?

thanks,
jmarkotic

2.Netra X1 - Can't open boot device

Hi,

I'm rebuilding a Netra X1 with Solaris 8 2/02.....

I can build it off the network, and the build goes successfully.
However, when I reboot, and the box tries to boot from disk, it gives
me the following:

.....
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ide@d/disk@0,0 FIle and args:
Evaluating: boot disk

Can't open boot device

......

and then it tries to boot from the network again. Any thoughts? The
hardware is good, I just can't seem to point it to a good boot device.
Please help.

- Thanks,

Todd

3.Netra X1 hangs when net booting Solaris 10 1/06

I have a boot server and a Netra X1 on the same subnet. While I can
net boot the X1 into single-user Solaris 9 ("boot net -s"), it won't boot
Solaris 10 1/06: it hangs shortly after loading the kernel and
requesting it's address for the third(?) time (the full transcript is
below).

Ideas? Other posts have indicated that not having "anon=0" in the
dfstab will lead to problems like this, but it's already set.

    Greg

4.Netra X1 hangs at boot time

Hello,

I'm trying to reinstall a Netra X1. I try to boot directly form a other
used netra Hard disk with Solaris8 inside, and hangs at boot. We try to
do an "boot -s" and still hangs.

We try to put a CDROM on second IDE as a master, and doing "boot" and
"boot -s" with Solaris 8 and 9 hangs. This is a screen of the hang:

ok boot cdrom
