  • 1. Poor disk I/O, PIO instead of DMA???
I'm seeing ~1.8 MB/s write & ~4 MB/s read with dd(1) from /dev/zero & to /dev/null using 1024k blocks for 1 GB files. I assume it's because I'm not configured to do DMA transfers. This is on a Toshiba 1405-S151. Suggestions or pointers to RTFM? BTW Many thanks to Sun. With the free distribution of Solaris 10 & Sun Suite 11 for x86 I now have a real use for this thing. It's not "Big Endian like God intended", but neither Linux nor FreeBSD were quite up to my requirements for stability & function and a SPARC laptop is still a bit pricey. But it *does* behave like my regular work machine :-)
  • 2. Solaris 10 zones. mirror disks in global, or mirror in local?
i haven't run into this problem yet, but the thought occurred to me. maybe the question is moot: maybe it can only be done one way. you tell me. let's say i have a global and a local zone. let's say the local zone is going to have mirrored disks. do i mirror the disks in the global zone, and tell the local zone about the completed mirror? or, do i just give the local zone the disks and let it do the mirroring? i'm also wondering what happens if there are differences if, say, i want to grow the mirrored disk in the local zone. if the global zone is calling the shots, then i'd have to grow it in the global zone and then grow it in the local zone again. uh, presuming, of course, that that's how you'd want to have the mirrors set up in the first place.... which may be wrong. assume disksuite, or whatever it's called these days---the Sun volume manager? j. -- Jay Scott 512-835-3553 XXXX@XXXXX.COM Head of Sun Support, Sr. Operating Systems Specialist Applied Research Labs, Computer Science Div. • 3. static /sbin/sh in Solaris 10?
I don't have access to a Sol 10 machine so I'm hoping someone can help with a couple of quick questions: 1. Did Sun make good on their promise/threat to remove all static system libraries, e.g. /lib/libc.a? 2. Is the /sbin/sh executable still statically linked? Solaris 9 shows: % ldd /sbin/sh ldd: /sbin/sh: file is not a dynamic executable or shared object Thanks, HT

Sun Fire V210 and A1000 Storage Array

Do you know if an A1000 should be able to run off of
the built in scsi interface on the V210? Or would I
need to buy another interface card?

The A1000 data sheet says UltraScsi - Differential
The V210 data sheet says Ultra160 Scsi multimode (SE/LVD)

Are they compatible? I currently have the two of them
hooked together and probe-scsi-all shows only the internal
drives. [not a good sign {tm}]

No, you need a differential [high voltage differential] SCSI controller.
The part number for Sun's PCI differential controller is 375-0006.

Thank you very much. That was my suspicion, but I figured I should
get some confirmation.

1.Linux & Sun Fire V210

Hello,
I would like to know if there is a way to install on a Sun Fire V210
anything (a linux for exemple ..) but not Solaris. Ive already tried the
last debian 3r2 but no success. It seems that the new archtecture of the
ultrasparc 3 is very closed to the sun world. Any help would be great.

2.strange "uname -v" output on Sun Fire V210

OS: Solaris 8 with latest recommented patch cluster
Platform: SunFire V210

We just bought a Sun Fire V210. before I did jumpstart on it,
the "uname -v" output is:
Generic_108528-18

But after I jumpstarted it, the output of "uname -v" is:
Generic_117350-02

I used the same jumpstart server to jumpstart a Sun SParc 5 and Sun Fire V120,
both output of "uname -v" are:
Generic_108528-29

Any idea why "uname -v" is differnet for Sun Fire V210?

Thanks.

3.v210 sun fire memory query

hi
Can you mix memory sizes as long as they are in pairs across
processors ?
The machine has 2 cpus each with 4 slots. Currently in 2 slots for
each processor there is 512mb of memory giving a total machine memory
of 2gb. Can I add 2x 1gb memory dimms, 1 per cpu or do I need to keep
512mbs ? thanks. I've had a search but its difficult to know what to
search on and I end up just getting pricing for it.

4.Sun Fire V210 Server

OK, I was given an "old" Sun Fire V210 server to replace my curent
SPARC 10... Which I accepted... Now, I am wanting to load it and see NO
keyboard/Monitor connections... Just an ETH0/1 and Serial and LOM
ports, there is NOT even a CD/DVD drive...

Can I wipe and rebuild? If so how....

Thanks

Carl

5.strange Sun Fire V210 disk controller

New V210 with SOlaris 8.
When I unpacked this V210 and turn the power on, the disk showed
c1t0d0, but after I jumpstarted it to Solaris 8, the disk
turns to be c0d0s0.

Any idea why the fidk controller changed from 1 to 0?
Thanks.
