I am assigned a project here for the US Army here in Iraq that requires the use of Sun Computers. I have a Sun Ultra 10. I do not have the monitor for this device. I would like to setup a console connection to this computer using a laptop. Can someone provide som guidance on how to connec tot a Sun Computer via console. Please let me know what types of cables VTY settings ect.

Hi, I am using NIS for user management on a small network. I have solaris 10 setup with autofs so that users always have the same home directory. My problem is that while I can create files, I cannot delete that same file, except on the computer where I created it, although I can see the file on any of the systems. On the computer where I created the file, the owner and group is set correctly on the file permissions. On all the other computers the group and owner are "nobody", and I cannot open or delete the file. Does anybody know where I might be going wrong. Thanks, Bart
  • 3. disc type
hi all, Apart from taking the cover of my ultra 10 is there any way to work out what type of hdd are in there, i assume they're scsi, but im not that hot with scsi stuff (coming from the cheaper world of ide). Any pointers to the scsi type would be great. (there is a p/n sticker on the outer case ... could this lead me anywhere ?) cheers dave

Hi, I am investigating the cause of high kernel cpu usage on Solaris 9. What I really want to know is how I can tell which user processes are causing the kernel cpu to be so high. Is there a way of telling the percentage of kernel usage each user process is causing? Thanks in advance, Erinys.

Sun Fire V100 - Max IDE disk size?

Postby BertieBigBollox@gmail.com » Fri, 27 Apr 2007 00:33:43 GMT

Cant find anything in the documentation about this...

Anyone got any idea what the max disk size that the V100 will
recognise is? If there is a max...

Don't count on more than 127 GB unless you find it written somewhere in
Sun's documentation. It's a limitation built in to Sun's IDE
controllers and AFAIK, it applies to ALL Sun IDE.

No, it applies to all Sun IDE controllers released before PC system
makers started doing ATA-6 that supported more than 127GB drives.
Just like in the PC world.

But, the V100 is an older system that was pre ATA-6, so yes, it won't
support drives bigger.

4.boot sun fire v100 from an external USB cd/dvd

I found bunch of posts but really none of them seemed to have said if
it's possible, and if so how.

I am trying to install a v100 from a DVD rom, but sonce the box comes
with cd only and no scsi, I am trying to figure it out.
Yes, I know I can install from cd, or boot of the network.. my point
is judt somply knowing if I can do it from USB attached CD/DVD.
(It's an ide cdrom put into an external usb2/firewire case).

Of course I cannot see it in probe-scsi or ide, or any other (sifting
usb did not show anythng to probe all usb), however it shows just fine
when I boot into the OS (Sol9) (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0 - as opposed to c0 for
internals).

I tried booting off of /pci@1f,0/usb@a/storage@1:0
The way I got this path was playing between devalias and ls...

Well.. it is not working.

I even tried to dd the dvd to c1t2d0s0 (or s2) to see if then I could
trick the os to think it was a CD.. well. sure enough this did not
work...

So I am back to trying USB.. any ideas/suggestions would be greatly
appreciated...
it just does not seem it should ba quite that hard, but of couse SUN
does not support it so I am on my own and hate not knowing how to do
it.

Thx in advance for any ideas.

5.Need help with Sun Fire V100

Hi,
I bought Sun Fire V100 from EBay but seems to be defective. But I can't seem
to find what's wrong with it.
First couple of times it booted nicely and I thought everything is fine.
Wishful thinking.
Then it started to hang on boot. booting device ... args ...
For example it boots fine, and when I do reboot it ends up booting from net
(in loop) although need to boot from disk.
I posted some outputs that can help someone to conclude what is wrong.
