  • 1. Solaris 8 Disksuite 4.2.1 Quorum Issue
I have been reading a lot of information these past few days about Disksuite 4.2.1 and the disk quorum problem. Obviously it is ideal to have three disks, two for mirroring and one as a metadb repository. Of course, this is not always possible if a person is in an environment that uses a majority of Solaris 8 on v120's, 210's, 240's and 480's. What is the consensus? Does the /etc/system parameter: set md:mirrored_root_flag=1 provide any weight at all in case of a disk failure? Thanks
  • 2. Sharing A Device / Shared Memory Issues
Hi All, Need help sharing a device. I've got a device that I can open and establish a single connection to at any given time via open(). The device is a timing card and needs to be accessbile by many processes; I don't have 10ms to wait around for the device to be opened, queried, and closed in order for another process to use it. I tried writing a daemon that updates a shared memory space with other processes can query, but the memory space is not being updated at a consistent rate. Therefore, I have some questions I hope somebody might be able to answer: - I'm running a 4-processor Solaris box; is there some type of shm?flush? call I need to perform to have each processor see the memory being updated? - Is there a better way to do this in general -- i.e. another method of IPC that is more reliable? Any insight is appreciated.
  • 3. NIS with DNS forwarding and firewall
The NIS server of Solaris 7 shows the following strange behaviour when DNS forwarding is used: the reply to a host request is sent from an UDP port different from the port that received the request. This does not occur when the host name is in the NIS hosts map itself, not requiring DNS forwarding. This behaviour makes it almost impossible to use the hosts map of a Solaris 7 NIS server for a client with a stateful firewall, since the replies are not recognized as such (because of the nonidentical server ports) and are blocked, if DNS forwarding is performed. -- Hans Werner Strube strube(@)physik3(.)gwdg(.)de Drittes Physikalisches Institut, Univ. • 4. Battery in A3500FC
I replaced the battery canister (added refurbished unit which we purchased from the web) in A3500FC unit and ran raidutil command to reset the date and it says Battery age is between 0 and 90 days! But when I am looking at battery canister I noticed Amber light on Fault A and on Fault B. There are no lights on Fully Charge A and B. It has been two days since we replaced the battery. Does this mean the battery is bad as there is Amber lights ? Any help will be appreciated. We do not have contract with SUN.
  • 5. Solaris 10, JDS, setting PS1 for bash -- where?
Where is the proper location to set PS1 when using Solaris 10 and Java Desktop System? I've tried .bash_profile, .bashrc, .profile, local.profile, local.login. The only place that it seems to work is in /etc/profile and that doesn't seem like the ideal place to set this even if this is just a one user system. TIA. Jim.

Netra X1 - Can't open boot device

Postby Todd » Wed, 03 Oct 2007 02:19:21 GMT

Hi,

I'm rebuilding a Netra X1 with Solaris 8 2/02.....

I can build it off the network, and the build goes successfully.
However, when I reboot, and the box tries to boot from disk, it gives
me the following:

.....
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ide@d/disk@0,0 FIle and args:
Evaluating: boot disk

Can't open boot device

......

and then it tries to boot from the network again. Any thoughts? The
hardware is good, I just can't seem to point it to a good boot device.
Please help.

- Thanks,

Todd

OK I'll bite. Its kind of day.
Are you SURE you must have Solaris 8? Its is almost 10 years old now :

Anyway - "disk" seems to point to target 0. Is there more than one
disk?
Did you install the OS on disk 1 ?

1.Booting Netra X1 from external USB CD-ROM device

Hi,
I'm planning to purchase Netra X1 from Ebay. Since X1's don't have CD-ROM I
was wondering if it's possible to boot Netra X1 from external USB CD-ROM and
install Solaris from scratch. I've never done solaris install over
network/jumpstart so I don't feel like experimenting now to do it.
I wan't to buy 1RU server for network monitoring programs: netflow, mrtg,
maybe snort for a small network installation. Is there another Sun server in
that price class that would be better suited for purpose ?

2.Netra X1 hangs when net booting Solaris 10 1/06

I have a boot server and a Netra X1 on the same subnet. While I can
net boot the X1 into single-user Solaris 9 ("boot net -s"), it won't boot
Solaris 10 1/06: it hangs shortly after loading the kernel and
requesting it's address for the third(?) time (the full transcript is
below).

Ideas? Other posts have indicated that not having "anon=0" in the
dfstab will lead to problems like this, but it's already set.

    Greg

3.Netra X1 hangs at boot time

Hello,

I'm trying to reinstall a Netra X1. I try to boot directly form a other
used netra Hard disk with Solaris8 inside, and hangs at boot. We try to
do an "boot -s" and still hangs.

We try to put a CDROM on second IDE as a master, and doing "boot" and
"boot -s" with Solaris 8 and 9 hangs. This is a screen of the hang:

ok boot cdrom

Maybe is a OBP variable problem? Maybe a hardware pb? Any ideas?

4.Booting Netra X1

Hi everybody,

I am a newbie to Sun systems. I recently got a Sun Netra X1 server. I
didn't come with any harddrives so I installed my own in it. I want to
install BSD on the server. I've got instructions online about booting
to a cdrom. However whenever I type the command 'boot cdrom' I
received the message 'command not recongized' I can list all the
commands at the 'lom>' prompt and 'boot' is not listed, only 'bootmode'
Also if I type the command 'poweron' the server starts up and does
nothing else. I don't know if this server is broken or not. Could
someone help me with booting this server? Thanks.

5.Open-E iSCSI Soho target and Netra x1 + Solaris 10 (with its own iSCSI initiator)

Hello,
I intend to try to connect an iSCSI target to my Netra x1 (using
a SOHO flash card set up in a Dell Poweredge 1400sc). I still
have to install Solaris 10 on the Netra, in order to have an
initiator.
Anybody ever happened to d-i-y that kind of stuff before, any
experience to share ? I'll let you know anyway if I manage to get
it work (I intend to do that by myself at home, for sheer
experimentation purposes).

In advance, thanks.
Seb
