Hi people i've a problem. i cannot connect to my server (fujitsu PP650 solaris 5.9) as root from remote terminal it's impossible also from remsh or rlogin. I can only connect as other user such as "oracle". but it's very strange: if i login as oracle and then i do: su - oracle i cannot receive any feedback. Ths system is up and running, i've no space problem, dns is ok, i've no error on /var/adm/message. Fortunately i've a root terminal on my console but i don't know how to resolve it. Please if someone can give me a feedback any help will be appreciated Thank you Mike
  • 2. ssh and .rhosts or .shosts
Hi all, I installed OpenSSH (openssh-4.0p1-sol8-sparc-local.gz) on Solaris 8. All work fine (ssh, sftp, scp...etc) In the same server, i used rsh to execute remote command by using .rhosts. I will delete rsh and use ssh. By using SSH, i juste need to execute remote command by using .rhosts or .shosts. It's work fine, but the system ask me password. The system seem ignore .rhosts and .shosts files. I confirm that rsh no ask me the user password, so the configuration of .rhosts is good ! and .shosts is "cp -p" of .rhosts. I tried to modify options on ssh_config (HostbasedAuthentication yes, IgnoreRhosts no) but it's not work. I olso tried with options RhostsRSAAuthentification and RhostsAuthentification but the system always ask me password. So, i juste need to use ssh to execute command command on remote host without ask me password. I known, it's not secure but, i need to know how can i do it. Any idea ? Thank You very much for your help Best Regards NS
  • 3. Where is faspac?
I see in the application packaging guide on docs.sun.com, it mentions a utility called faspac to convert a regular package into an archive package where the actual files are possibly compressed. This could be incredibly handy for a project I'm working on. However, looking at what I'm pretty sure are complete installations of Solaris 8, 9, and 10, it does not seem to exist anywhere I've looked. Am I just blind?
  • 4. Backup/recovery of Solaris 8 and Veritas Volume manager
We are currently on patch level 108528-22 of Solaris 8. My DBA says to install a specific Oracle 9i patch on this system it is complaining we got to get to 108528-23. I downloaded that patch no problems. My task at hand now is to backup our operating system before I put that 108528-23 patch on because I am fearful of a problem booting after that is applied. So, to make a long story short, the system has Veritas volume manager/fs installed and root disk is encapsulated and there is a root mirror disk. My question(s) is related to what the Sun recommended/certified way of backing up the O/S with this given characteristcs. And also, if I run into any problems after applying the O/S patch how do I restore and get me up and running again? How to I test the procedure without destroying the system? Note, we also have other disk groups other than root all using Veritas volume/fs.
  • 5. OK, so how am I supposed to know my support contract info?
We got our new Blade 150, Solaris 10 w/ 1 year of a gold support contract, all bought direct from Sun. Theres no problem with the hardware, thats running fine. However there was exactly nothing I could find in the set of boxes that gave me any indication of contract numbers, or any suggestion that I'd bought any support of any kind. How do I find that stuff out, or is it ever so cleverly hidden someplace? Thanks, Greg

Setting up a RAID 0+1

Postby treeshe » Sun, 15 Feb 2004 02:33:35 GMT

I am trying to setup a RAID 0+1 and I am having trouble with the meta
databases. I have setup RAID 5 this way with no problems.

I formatted my four disks into three slices.

Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
  0 root wm 0 - 2 4.23MB (3/0/0)
8667
  1 swap wm 3 - 24619 33.91GB (24617/0/0)
71118513
  2 backup wu 0 - 24619 33.92GB (24620/0/0)
71127180
  3 unassigned wu 0 0 (0/0/0)
  0
  4 unassigned wu 0 0 (0/0/0)
  0
  5 unassigned wu 0 0 (0/0/0)
  0
  6 unassigned wu 0 0 (0/0/0)
  0
  7 unassigned wu 0 0 (0/0/0)
  0

I then created meta databases on slice 0 like this for each disk.

metadb -f -a 2 -l 1034 c3t3d0s0
metadb -f -a 2 -l 1034 c3t4d0s0
metadb -f -a 2 -l 1034 c3t8d0s0
metadb -f -a 2 -l 1034 c3t12d0s0

I attempted to create the strip like this:

metainit d11 1 2 c3t3d0s2 c3t4d0s2

I received an error that said:

metainit: system1: c3t3d0s2: overlaps with device in metadevice state
database

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,
Eric

I wouldn't normally count slice 2 as a separate slice since it's an
overlay. To me, I'd say "I've created 2 slices on this disk".

No. You're attempting to create them on s2, which includes the
metadevice blocks in s0. You want to create the device on s1 which
doesn't overlap.

You're using a device that overlaps with the metadevice state database
slice. Don't use slice 2.

1.Samba/LPD/CUPS/Windows printer set ups

I have a requirement where local Windows PCs must be able to print to their
local Windows printer when connected to a new OpenServer 6.0 server. I was
familiar with visionFS but now I need to use Samba. I researching this, I
discovered that most Samba to Windows printers configuration require CUPS. I
need to locate info on:

1) How to make CUPS the standard print spooler.

2) Set up and start Samba correctly.

3) Configure Windows printers which would be accessible from OpenServer 6.0
(Samba???) An example would be nice.

2.Looking for a NUT (Network UPS Tools) compatible UPS

We have plans to buy and install 3 nos of 2kva On/Offline UPS's at
Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Jallander for our two Redhat Linux 8.0 and one 9.0
master servers. The total load at all these locations is around 1.2kva and
each UPS' should provide 2-3 hours of a back time.

Please suggest us some smart UPS's compatible to NUT (Network UPS Tools)
software manufactured and, or maketed by indian companies.

4.UPS -- Using Belkin UPS -- upsd ???

I noticed a lack of documentation for the upsd port.... From what I've been
able to determine -- upsd supports an APC UPS...

I have a Belkin serial port ups.... Can anyone / someone recommend a sysutil
that will work with a Belkin UPS ???
