Is the Dynamic File System always active on Solaris 10. Do you have to activate it? Is it mostly hype form the marketing department at Sun? Any suggestions on parameters for newfs for a file system that will hold many small mail message files using the MailDir format? Thanks
  • 2. Sun V440 won't start after swapping disks
Hi All, My system administrator is very busy so as being an Oracle DBA I am installing Oracle software on a disk in slot 0. This failed and I did shut the SUN V440 with /etc/shutdown -i5 -g0 -y with an active RAID disk. Next I swapped the disk in slot 1 to slot 0 and did not insert any disk in slot 0. The Sun V440 won't start. Question? Do I have to perform some action on the RAID disk before shutting down the server? Thanks, Fred
  • 3. Understanding and Reacting to Top.
Greetings. I am a new solaris administrator. I've just set up an x86 solaris box at home to learn on. The machine itself is a 1.4 gig processor with 128 megs of ram. I'm trying to learn about system management tools, top being the most obvious.. When I run top on this box, I can see 6 httpd processes each with a size of 148M... is the top "size" display directly related to memory? If it is, how can I possibly be running 6x148M processes just on apache alone? Any help, pointers to tutorials or books would be appreciated. Thanks for your time, Luke MacNeil.

Need help with Sun Fire V100

Postby jmarkotic » Fri, 21 Nov 2003 06:19:54 GMT

i,
I bought Sun Fire V100 from EBay but seems to be defective. But I can't seem
to find what's wrong with it.
First couple of times it booted nicely and I thought everything is fine.
Wishful thinking.
Then it started to hang on boot. booting device ... args ...
For example it boots fine, and when I do reboot it ends up booting from net
(in loop) although need to boot from disk.
I posted some outputs that can help someone to conclude what is wrong.

Well, that's not true. You see it trying to boot from the disk right
there.

Check the setting of the 'diag-switch?' variable in the OBP. If it's
true, then you boot from the 'diag-device' listing instead of the
'boot-device' listing.

You may either change the 'diag-device' to match the 'boot-device', or
you may set 'diag-switch?' to false.

You certainly may have some other issues, but that should allow it to
boot from the device you want.

to
memory.

Yes, you are right. I intentionally set diag-switch? to true to see some
diagnostics, but didn't know that I need to change diag-device accordingly.
thanks.
But I still have some problems with hw. I managed to install hw, but
sometimes it happens that server is{*filter*} on boot (without actually
loading kernel).
thanks,
j

4.boot sun fire v100 from an external USB cd/dvd

I found bunch of posts but really none of them seemed to have said if
it's possible, and if so how.

I am trying to install a v100 from a DVD rom, but sonce the box comes
with cd only and no scsi, I am trying to figure it out.
Yes, I know I can install from cd, or boot of the network.. my point
is judt somply knowing if I can do it from USB attached CD/DVD.
(It's an ide cdrom put into an external usb2/firewire case).

Of course I cannot see it in probe-scsi or ide, or any other (sifting
usb did not show anythng to probe all usb), however it shows just fine
when I boot into the OS (Sol9) (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0 - as opposed to c0 for
internals).

I tried booting off of /pci@1f,0/usb@a/storage@1:0
The way I got this path was playing between devalias and ls...

Well.. it is not working.

I even tried to dd the dvd to c1t2d0s0 (or s2) to see if then I could
trick the os to think it was a CD.. well. sure enough this did not
work...

So I am back to trying USB.. any ideas/suggestions would be greatly
appreciated...
it just does not seem it should ba quite that hard, but of couse SUN
does not support it so I am on my own and hate not knowing how to do
it.

Thx in advance for any ideas.
