  • 1. grub menu.lst
Hi, I've done a liveupgrade from solaris 10GA to snv_30. The snv_30 image resides on c1d0s0 and I was able to successfully boot the image. Now I want to delete the solaris 10GA image to reuse the space. Yet ludelete cannot delete it because the menu.lst still resides on that partition. [root@zippy:/boot/grub]#ludelete Solaris_10GA ERROR: The boot environment <Solaris_10GA> contains the GRUB menu. ERROR: You are not allowed to delete this BE. Unable to delete boot environment. I manually copied the menu.lst to the new partition ran installgrub and adapted the files /etc/lu/GRUB_slice to reflect the new partition. I also deleted the menu.lst in the old partition. But ludelete still complains about the menu.lst and after rebooting I ended up in grub without having a menu.lst at all (because I had deleted the menu.lst within the solaris 10GA partition). How can I move the menu.lst to my new active root disk? Thanks for helping me out. mark
  • 2. Tar -X not working.
Hi all. I can't seem to get the exclude function in tar to work. I'm using the form: tar -cfvX /export/home/tarfile.tar -X /tmp/excludeFile /dir1/dir2 In the exclude file I have: /dir1/dir2/dir3 /dir1/dir2/dir4 I want to archive everything in /dir1/dir2 except dir3 and dir4. I've tried this with both absolute paths and relative paths, but it never excludes those directories. I know questions like this are usually beneath you guys, but I haven't been able to find anything that's helped. Thanks
  • 3. awk script
Hi all, I need to modify an output of a script with awk. I need to see only the first 16 characters of this output, cutting the remaing so, if I have abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz as output I just want to see it 16 chara lenght abcdefghijklmnop (of course I would like to see the output if it is shorter than 16 char) I cannot understand how to do this in awk man Cheers :)
  • 4. Cron jobs and Users
Hello, I have a user who has scheduled a cron job to run hourly. However, this job does not appear to be running. It is a script to move and compress some logs, but these files are not being created and I am at a loss as to why this isn't working: The user can run the script successfully from the command line The cron entry is formatted correctly The user is not in /etc/cron.deny (and there is no cron.allow) There is an entry in /var/cron/log on the relevant times to show the job is being executed, but the new files are still not being created. I have copied and pasted the cron entry in root's crontab, and the script works fine. Does anybody know why this job is not working for the user please? I can't think of anything else that I am missing. Thanks, ogbk
  • 5. suninstall from DVD
I've a Solaris 9 DVD in a (reasonably) remote system that I'd like to install with suninstall (i.e., the installer from Software CD 1 of 2), but the DVD wants to use Web Start. Is there a flag I can pass to run suninstall instead? Web Start doesn't have the options that I need. Ceri -- That must be wonderful! I don't understand it at all. -- Moliere

Netra X1 hangs when net booting Solaris 10 1/06

Postby Greg Mortensen » Wed, 24 May 2006 23:34:41 GMT

I have a boot server and a Netra X1 on the same subnet. While I can
net boot the X1 into single-user Solaris 9 ("boot net -s"), it won't boot
Solaris 10 1/06: it hangs shortly after loading the kernel and
requesting it's address for the third(?) time (the full transcript is
below).

Ideas? Other posts have indicated that not having "anon=0" in the
dfstab will lead to problems like this, but it's already set.

  Regards,
    Greg

Mmmnnn. Well your jumpstart config files are correct. What interface
do you define in sysidcfg? Try explicitly defiining dmfe0 as the
primary interface.

See anything on the network when this happens? Valid response?
Anything from the client after that?

1.Netra X1 hangs at boot time

Hello,

I'm trying to reinstall a Netra X1. I try to boot directly form a other
used netra Hard disk with Solaris8 inside, and hangs at boot. We try to
do an "boot -s" and still hangs.

We try to put a CDROM on second IDE as a master, and doing "boot" and
"boot -s" with Solaris 8 and 9 hangs. This is a screen of the hang:

ok boot cdrom

Maybe is a OBP variable problem? Maybe a hardware pb? Any ideas?

2.Solaris 10 1/06 installation hangs after booting from CD

I downloaded 4 ISO images (x86) from Sun and burnt them to CDs, and
after I try to boot installation from CD 1, and select either item
from GRUB menu (e.g. "Solaris"), I start getting standard messages on
the screen: "SunOS Release 5.10 Version GENERIC-118844-26 32-bit,
Copyright [...] Use is subject to license terms", that remains the
last message on the screen. I was waiting and waiting and installation
doesn't go any further.
Although I had tried installing Solaris 10 from DVD few months ago on
the same machine (laptop) and everything went fine; i downloaded
"Solaris Installation Check Tool" and burnt ISO and after booting from
it, the same thing happens: it hangs after the initial "Copyright
message"... What to do? Why is this?? I haven't got DVD burner and
Solaris DVD at this moment, so I need your help as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance.
