  • 2. Virtual PC limits
Hi, I've just started using Virtual PC and I find it really amazing! My question is, regarding to the emulation (or I think the right term is virtualization), are there imperfections? Are there some things that just can't be done on a virtual machine when compared to the host machine? I mean, it only makes sense to test applications on a VM if we can count on the fact that it will act exactly like a physical machine.
  • 3. VPC cannot find bootdrive.
Hi group, I've installed virtual PC on 2 different mascines with vista 32 and vista 64, but suffer from same problem on both of them --> Not hardware problem, but most likely ME that is the problem :-/ I can create Virtual maschines without problems, configure them with ram and harddisk, and I can also select CD drive, both real CD and a bootimage. My problem is that VPC starts and it seems to trying to boot from network, even in situations where I disabled network, and finally it comes with the errormessage "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in boot device". In CD menu I have the option to release drive / iso image, so it must mean that it is captured correct. Any suggestions?

Shared folders show up as "not installed"

Postby Josh Assing » Fri, 05 Aug 2005 03:20:31 GMT

Host system: WinXP Pro
Guest System: WinXP Pro (different serial #'s)

I had shared folders working; then I restored the guest os & shared folders are
showing up as "not installed". so I uninstalled the additions, rebooted,
installed the addtions, rebooted; still they show as "not installed".

Any ideas?

Thanks

Shared folders only is enabled when the virtual machine is running with
Virtual Machine Additions installed (not when the virtual machine is
turned off or in a saved state).

Thanks Ben, I guess I wasn't clear with my description.

" so I uninstalled the additions, rebooted, installed the addtions, rebooted;
still they show as "not installed"."

This should have been clarified as "After rebooting, the XP VM machine is booted
up, logged in & functioning/running. The "Shared Folders" is still marked as
"not installed".

I think I tracked this down - it appears tied to the network cards -- if they
are disabled or in "limited connectivity" mode -- then shared folders don't
work.
