  • 1. Hacked by VJ
One of our computers has got this virus 'Hacked by VJ' which appears in the title bar of IE. There is very little information about this virus on the net and the antivirus program did not detect it. Referrences to it were deleted in the registry but didn't work, this thing is active on boot up and simply rewrites itself back into the registry. I do not know how harmful it is, I suspect probably not very harmful. From what I have found out it is transmitted from computer to computer mainly through USB flashdrives, though this is not confirmed. OS is XP pro with all updates ........Steve W (in Aus)
  • 2. Anti-Virus Software without Internet Connection
I have a computer that is used for processing classified information. Under our security protocols, we cannot allow this computer to be connected to the internet, yet we must maintain up-to-date antivirus software on it. Norton and McAfee both require updates be received online. Windows Defender requires the operating system be verified through their Genuine Advantage program. Is there any mainstream anti-virus program that I can install without registering it online and still receive updated virus definition files (e.g. from a CD either direct from the company or downloaded to another computer)? Thanks!

It is good and it is safe, but I prefer the more full-featured EZ-Trust.
Microsoft has partnered with Computer Associates to offer a free
one-year's subscription to the EZ-Armor suite (av and firewall). A
better choice, I think:

In article <17c401c47bd5$c9fae4d0$ XXXX@XXXXX.COM >, says...

Do not run two 'on access' virus scanners at the same time. Ever; they will
trip over each other, and they may miss an infected file. You can use
multiple scanners 'on demand', though, if you run only one at a time to scan
the system.

Do you actually have an infection? Sometimes the anti virus program is not
clear on what it is doing. Norton will attempt to "clean" a file, then put
it in quarantine if it can't be "cleaned". Often enough, the file it can't
clean is not a an infected system file, but the infection itself. If such a
file is in quarantine, it is not in a position to infect your system.

Even so, running a removal tool should be pretty harmless; if there is no
infection, it just won't find anything to do. So, it won't hurt to run it,
if you want to be certain. You should disable an 'on access' virus scanner
while running a removal tool, though; especially if the tool is from a
different vendor than the 'on access' scanner.

Hi

Has anyone any experience of running AVG professional V7.0 on a Windows 2003
server?

I have a client who is having problems in that the server seems to randomly
go away with the fairies for a period of a few minutes. It almost seems that
the server is just looping and not allowing any access from outside.

They are running an Excel spreadsheet on a workstation and for no reason it
hangs. Wait a few minutes and it comes back again. This is happening on
several workstations. After much investigation everything seems to be
pointing to the AVG software on the server but we cannot prove anything.

Any help much appreciated

Check Grisoft's web site and verify that v7.0 is certified for Server OS's.

Based upon Lanwench's post, your client needs AVG File Server Edition not AVG Professional
v7.0

Doesn't AVG have a Help file? I would think it would say how to do this
in there. If there is no Help file, I suppose you could just manually
delete the files but I'd certainly check with the vendor's support site
first (www.grisoft.com).

AVG

Postby Info » Thu, 20 Nov 2008 10:07:50 GMT

I installed a trial version of AVG and selected the create firewall option.
I restarted the computer and tried to send an email and got an error message
saying that the email could not be sent because I have a firewall. I'm on
the only computer in my house and I have only one Internet connection. I
uninstalled AVG because I'd like to use email. I sent an email to someone
and it got through. The person replied and I got his email.

Do you know a way around this? Not just with AVG but with other anti-virus
software? I have Windows Firewall on and it doesn't block my emails.
Thanks
