One of my hoped for uses for Visio is as a drawing tool for simple cnc shapes. On the outline for the shapes I would like to leave gaps for holding the piece in place, enabling me to snap out the final work. In my previous software I was able to overlay a couple of lines the required distance apart and where they cut the wanted shape I could use a delete tool that created a gap/gaps in the shape. Then I could delete the lines, leaving my shape with gaps in it. I can see an eraser tool in the pens toolbox but can't seem to get it to do anything, and searching for eraser in the help file gives no hits. Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to do what I want, either in a similar fashion or some other way? TIA Dave
  • 2. Visio HTML "undefined' hovertext
Hello - I am Saving As HTML on some Visio diagrams. The HTML looks good - however when I hover on objects the hover text is showing the Text Label value but also has "undefined" - I cannot seem to locate what field needs to be populated / what attribute I need to change? On unlabelled objects (objects without any text labels) the hover is "undefined undefined" Thanks for your help
  • 3. Separators in Cross Functional Diagrams
I created a swim diagram and added a fill. How do I keep the separators in front? I sent the band to the back, brought the separators forward, and it looks great until I close the document and reopen. Then, the separators don't show up. I changed the translucency of the fill to be able to see them, but I'd like to have them in front.
  • 4. Single point for editing? (network diagram)
I am creating mutliple network diagrams and hyperlinking them together for navigation. In some cases within multiple documents I have the same object appear. Is there a way to link that object to a single diagram so that when i make a change to that specific item it changes it in all of the other diagrams (ex. delete it, change text, etc...)?
  • 5. Data link error in Visio Professional
I just installed Visio Pro 2007, as well as the SP1 update. I'm trying out the new feature that links data to the shapes, and I keep getting error messages when I try to link either Excel files or Access files. For Excel, I keep getting the error message "The Microsoft Excel File is currently inaccessible", and for Access files I get the message "Cannot connect to the data source." I've tried to load multiple files of different types (e.g. Excel 2003, Excel 2007, Macro-enabled Excel files) and consistently get the same error. I'm wondering if there is simply a problem with an import engine that wasn't properly installed, or if I'm missing something else. This seems to be a pretty straightforward task that I can't get to work.

Visio thinks an invisible line is present during line routing, but can't select it otherwise

Postby Richard Lewis Haggard » Thu, 12 Jan 2006 06:17:53 GMT

I spent hours making a big flow chart only to notice when I'd finished that
Visio thinks that there is an invisible long line that extends vertically up
about 3/4 of the chart. At least I think that's what Visio thinks. The line
is invisible so it is somewhat hard to see. The only reason I know it's
there is because all of the lines that cross it have that little cross over
hump in them. How can I get rid of this invisible line?

It may be an invisible line or it may be an alignment bounding box that is
way too big.

If the drawing doesn't have 100's of shapes, finding a overly-large bounding
box is just a matter of selecting shapes one by one and seeing where the
green handles are. If you find one that is way out of wack, then select
Shape>Operations>Update Alignment Box.

Save a copy of the file first. Then getting rid of an invisible line could
be as easy as Edit->Select All then selecting a line color and weight that
would be visible...of course that action will change everything on your
drawing. Try using box select in the region you think the line is and
trying the same trick.

You might also check to see if you have any invisible layers in the Layer
Properties dialog box.

Do Ctrl-A to select all the shapes, this will include the annoying line.

Now, while holding the Ctrl key, click on each shape you want to keep. This
will deselect each shape and leave you with only the line selected.

Alternatively, you can zoom out and try and drag a selection rectangle
around the line. You can use the Ctrl-Click to remove unwanted items from
the select.

If you do a Ctrl-A or drag across an area, Visio will display a box
indicating what has been selected. As you remove items from the selection
list, the box decreases in size. This will give an indication of what may be
selected. If you zoom out after doing a Ctrl-A then the box will give an
indication of whether any items on the page go beyond the visible page.

1.Visio thinks an invisible line is present during line routing, but

With nothing selected, hit tab key which will select an object, keep hitting
tab key until it finds your unwanted line...tab key rotates thru each object
one at a time. Works in PowerPoint same way too.

2.Need Visio shape for 1 line of text-can't use the 2-line shapes

I need to create an Org Chart in Visio using only one line of text in the
shape.

All my shapes allow for two lines of text (i.e. Name and title) so when I
enter only one line of text, the top and bottom spacing is not equal - the
job title is at the top of the shape with an obviously larger space between
the text at the bottom of the shape.

3.Line jumps and invisible layers

Is there a way of preventing line-jumps being displayed when the line that's
being jumped is part of an invisible layer? I'd still want the line-jump to
be displayed when that layer is visible.

4.*** Line Jumps visible from different "invisible" layers ***

Hi,

No one seems to find the answer to the question I have posted here two days
ago!

How to fix line jumps that are displayed from different layers when those
layers are made invisible?

I want to stop one layer showing the line jumps that relate to an invisible
layer's connectors, can this be done??

I am just experimenting with making the lines background at the moment - not
sure if this will work.

5.Can't change LINE ENDS in Visio 2002?

Hi, strangely, on two different PCs (both with Visio 2002) I can't change
any of the LINE ends in my ERD diagrams?? I'm stuck with default Arrow but
I want the CHEN notation (circles at the end). I try to change it with the
FORMAT -> LINE options, and I see the other Line Ends to select, I can even
APPLY it inside the dialog box provided and actually SEE it change in the
format dialog box, but it never changes in the actual ERD??

Could this be a bug? What's up? Thanks for any input at all.

....Brad
