I've just started using Visio. I've been looking but I can't discern if there is a standardized listing of shape meanings. For example, if the trapazoid means a process. I've tried different strings to see if I can find something that references what the shapes mean but apparently I'm not wording it properly. I've tried looking on the MS website but again there doesn't seem to be a reference. Please help. Denyse

Hi Folks, I know I need Visio to do Data Flow Diagrams, but I don't know the important differences between standard and pro that would help me decide. Is there a link to a page that displays these differences in an easy-to-understand format or a few basic points that I need to know? Thanks! Matt

connector problem: wrong path

Postby mox601 » Sat, 11 Nov 2006 17:54:13 GMT

hello to everyone, this is my first post in the group.

i have a problem when attaching two shapes (routers in this case) with
a simple connector, that i want to be straight.
the problem is that in my project every new connector i draw has this
problem: it doesnt terminate where i want, and i have to move the
control points if i want to show the real path.
when i click the right button and select "straight connector", nothing
happens...
see the link for screenshots:

i really can't figure out the solution, please help!

Hey Mox,

Am I correct in understanding that you want a straight connector every time?

Go to File > Page Setup > Layout and Routing tab.

You can specify the style of layout and the style of connector here.
Straight-connectors are an option!

Changes made here will apply as default for the whole page (or document...I
think...)

i think i didn't explain my problem too well:
even if i choose a straight line, no changes are visible in the graph,
since the connector path is strange and "obscure". pratically, it goes
from one route to the other, but stopping suddenly in the middle, after
a 90angle. moving control points just unveils (and maybe adds...)
other control points, that seem to follow just straight lines or 45
ones. maybe there's a setting anyware that i switched on by mystake?

thanks

Right-click the connector and choose "reset connector"??

Click on the page background and then from the menu select
Window -> Show Shapesheet
There will be a section called Page Layout.
It could be that one of the values in this section has been set to
some strange value.
Report back on all the values in this section or compare them with a
known good blank diagram.

here are my values of page layout:
 http://www.**--****.com/
and thanks for the help, but it seems nothing is strange with the
parameters, and i can't reset the connector because the option is
grey...

1.connector problem: wrong path

2.Connector text position wrong when created with rounded corners

In Visio 2003 Professional, picture this:

1. Create an empty document without using a predefined drawing type; i.e.
use Ctrl+N.
2. Using the connector tool create a connector anywhere in the document.
Enter a bit of text for the connector. Text is centered on the connector,
lovely.
3. In Format->Define Styles, select the Line for the "Connector" style. Set
the Round Corners to 10 mm (any non-zero value will do, the bigger the
better). Apply and close both dialogues.
4. Create a new _straight_ connector anywhere in the document using the
Connector Tool. Enter a bit of text.

Notice how the text is not centered on the second connector? Why is that?
Seems to happen for all connectors _created_ while the style has rounded
corners. Setting the rounded corners after creating a connector works fine.

I need to add more arrows along a connector's path, instead of just having
one at the end.

5.Preventing Visio from merging connector paths

I have experimented and searched to the extent of my abilities and my
patience and have found no answer to nor even a mention of this issue.

When creating connections between shapes, Visio will merge similar paths by
default. See the simple example below. ('O's are shapes)

Formatted as it looks in this window:
OO
  €
OO

Formatted for pasting into Notepad (guaranteed to have correct spacing):
OO
 €€
OO

The problem is that I have no idea by looking at it, which 'O' is supposed
to be connected to which other 'O'. I can solve this by manually separating
the connectors. However, if there are going to be hundreds or more
connectors, an excessive amount of time would be spent manually rerouting
connectors, and the end result is unlikely to look as presentable as it would
if Visio had found optimal independent paths for all of the connectors.

Surely the developers of Visio knew that many documents will require the
ability to determine which shape is connected to which other shape by looking
at it. So, how can I prevent Visio from combining similar connector paths by
default?
