• 1. Visio and indexing
I recently installed Visio 2003 Professional on a Windows XP PC, and when searching for shapes for the first time, it asked me if I wanted to turn on some sort of indexing, to which I said yes without thinking. I think this is now conflicting with my f-secure antivirus, specifically fssm32.exe, which is hogging all the CPU time. My question is what did I turn on, and how do I turn it off. Thanks Paul
  • 2. Fixes for the VisioModelingEngine for upcoming version(s)
It seems that the 2003 version of Visio bites when trying to access the VisioModelingEngine (for database modeling). It's not documented by MS, there's like one web page in the entire Internet that seems to cover it at all, and the model has a lot of read-only attributes that prevent developers from properly hooking into it. So besides a rant to vent my frustrations, is there plans to open up this portion of Visio to developers? It's really frustrating, because it SEEMS like we should be able to do exactly what I want, but I can't because the API is locked down. In case someone is reading this, and found another tool to do what we're doing, we've got a development environment that's rich with meta-data. I can access all that meta-data through the application that we've built, and it would be very useful to generate diagrams of table, form, and report relationships. My initial plan was to dump out the meta-data in an XML file that could either be sent or imported into some sort diagramming tool. -- Clint

  • 4. How to Test/Debug the COM Add-In project efficiently?
Hi, I am writing a COM Add-In project for Visio 2003 using VB. In order to debug the code, I have to uninstall the previous COM component, reinstall the new COM component, and examine the variable values by inserting a bunch of MsgBox into the code. That really takes a lot of time to do so, is there a quick way embedded into the visual Studio IDE for debuging the COM add-in project? Thanks in advance! -- John 3:16

Cannot Edit .MSI File with Visio Publish Component Tool

Postby QW5kcmV3aW5LQw » Fri, 24 Aug 2007 04:28:04 GMT

I have a simple MSI file (created with InstallShield) that install a Visio
template and three supporting stencils. I update the various attributes, and
then click on the exclamation point button to update the MSI.

I get an error message that states, "ERROR: Problem writing to MSI database."

Any ideas??? Is this because I used InstallShield to build the MSI instead
of Visual Studio?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Andrew in KC

One additional piece of information. The initial MSI I was trying to update
was digitally signed. I built a new MSI that was not digitally signed. I
still have the same problem.

You might edit msi file with Orca.

1.Cannot edit Visio drawing file (.vsd) in SharePoint

After we upload a Visio drawing file (.vsd) to a document library in
SharePoint, we can successfully view it when directly clicking the link. But
when we try to edit this file on the site by clicking Edit in Microsoft
Office Visio, nothing happens. The file cannot be opened in Visio and no
error message. We have Visio Professional 2002 installed in the client PC.

Any idea about this problem?

Thanks.

2.HowTo: Create the installer for Add-on (.exe) as component-publish

After creating .msi file for Visio Add-on (.exe) developed by VB.NET, I
populated PublishComponent table in the .msi file by using Visio Solution
Publishing Tool.

Using the .msi file, I installed the Add-on (.exe) to a target computer but
Visio did not treat it as component-published to the registry.

Does anyone let me know how to create the installer for Visio Add-on (.exe)
as component-published under VB.NET?

Your step-by-step instruction is highly appreciated.

3.problem with visio solution publishing tool

I'm having problems with the visio 2003 publishing tool in so far as
Visio is unable to find the templates or stencils I've added. In some
of the many configurations I've tried Visio will place entries for the
menu paths I'm interested in creating into the Visio menu heirarchy,
but when I click on the file icon Visio errors out, saying:
Visio could not find this template.
An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly.
Would you like to repair this feature now?
Repairing is unsuccessful.

I've downloaded the Visio 2003 SDK, built my own msi file (using Orca
and the Windows Installer SDK) and merged the PublishComponent Data
generated by the Solution Publishing Tool into my msi file. The msi
file seems to be constructed properly; when I install the files appear
where I want them to and the Windows shortcuts I create find the files
just fine. Both files and shortcuts are removed when I uninstall. However,
Visio still can't seem to find the files.

I Googled this fairly heavily, not to mention MSDNing it, to no avail.
Has anyone had or solved this problem? Conversely has anyone been able to
successfully use the Publishing tool that would be willing to share some
screen shots so I can check what I'm doing against what is known ti be
successful?

Thanks in advance;
cori

5.Visio Solution Publishing Tool & LCIDs

Hi All,

I've been trying to use the Visio Solution Publishing Tool that comes with
the Visio 2003 SDK.

For templates, you can set an LCID, which is 0 by default, and 1033 for US
English.

On my machine, if I set it to anything other than 1033, then the template
does not show up in Visio's nice "Choose New Drawing" page, although
everything does get installed. (Even when I change my regional settings to
german!)

Problem is, I have a swiss customer that perhaps runs english on french
machines, or french on french machines. How do I get the template to install
"properly" on all machines?

BTW, if I open the msi file for the Visio SDK files, all components have
1033 for their LCIDs.

What is the Visio Solution Publishing Tool not telling us!?!?

- Chris.
