  • 2. Save As Image - Size & Transperancy Specification Issues
I use Visio quite intensively for creating graphics - UI, logos, icons, etc. I regularly output as EMF or PNG. My first issue is that Visio is very poor (ie "buggy") at saving PNG (and all the other formats) exactly as requested. More often than not if I specify, say, 200x200 pixels I will get 201x201. But not always. When saving as EMF there is a thin "margin" added to each image. So if I have specifically tried to fill an entire region I will now get a thin transperant edge with. This becomes impossible for "fitting" my image pieces together. And when saving as a PNG and specifying a transperancy colour I end up with an anti-aliased "edge" of the transperancy colour. Almost invariably I end up oversizing my images and then using a tool like Photoshop or ye' ol' Microsoft Image Composer to trim the edges. Is there anyway to make Visio work properly? Cheers.

I have used older versions of Visio and never had this problem. When I try and change the size of my shape I keep changing the size of the text box within the shape. I am using Visio 2003. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I saw another thread talking about the Acrobat toolbar showing up in Microsoft apps and being hard to get rid of. If you search on the subject above, you will find another thread with a reply on Feb 10 that tells how to get rid of it. You will need your Acrobat CD and use the add/remove program from control panel to remove the PDFMAKER from the installation. I did not like this either and I could see no reason that I can't do the same things from other menues.

Visio has stencils for single- and double-ended straight "thick" arrows. I need a stencil for a thick arrow with one or more 90-degree bends, which I can use in block and flow diagrams.

when update master shape, instances on page not updated

Postby SmVu » Fri, 19 May 2006 01:55:02 GMT

I'm making a diagram with many shapes on it, all with the same fill, text
style, line, and connector locations. I need the flexibility to be able to
update them all at once if, for example, I change the fill color or add a
couple of connection points. I'm using Visio Pro 2003 SP2.

I thought the solution was to make a new master shape, but I can't make the
shapes already on the page update to match the master when I change the
master. Here's what I did so far:

I carefully followed the help directions to create a new master shape and to
save the stencil I had it on. I then dragged it on to the page to make
several instances of that shape in a drawing. Then I edited the master shape
and re-saved the stencil. The help claims that doing so will automatically
update any instances of that shape on the page. It did not.

So I read a little further and found that you can also supposedly
right-click on the instance of the shape on the page and use Format > Style
and set the Text, Line, and Fill styles back to "use master's format." So I
did that. That didn't work, either.

Any suggestions?

Changing the master won't affect the shapes already added to your
diagrams.
You need to edit the shape(s) in the document stencil.
menu File --> Shapes

However, not all changes made to the shapes in the document stencil
will be duplicated in the shapes in the diagram.

Aha! That was the missing piece of information. The Visio Help file seems to
say that you can edit the master shape on the stencil you are using when you
create the diagram. I didn't realize I had to do it on the DOCUMENT's
stencil. (And in fact the Help file clearly does not provide that vital piece
of information.)

Thank you! That did the trick.

1.Update shape instances when master shape is changed

I've got a Visio drawing with about 300 instances of a master shape. When I
change some of the properties of the master shape it updates all the
instances as expected, after it prompts me for whether I want to update all
the instances of the master shape.

However, I want to make a change to the master shape with some VBA code and
get all the instances to update automatically. I have written some code
that seems to do this, but it doesn't always update all the instances.
Could someone paste a snippet of code that would do this to check that I am
on the correct lines, and furthermore, is there a way in VBA to tell it to
update all the instances after a change has been made to the master shape
(as the prompt would usually do, if the changes were made manually to the
master).

Many thanks.

2.Getting shape instances to update when master's dimensions are changed

I have a shape master that is a rectange with some text inside it.
When I edit it to make it longer (to fit more text in it), the instances of
the master on the page do not update.
Can anyone help me with this please?

Many thanks.

3.Updating shape instances in page when stencil mastershape is m

Al,

Thanks! I didn't know about this internal document stencil and took me some
looking around to find it, but it worked as you said; change the shape in
this doc stencil, and all the instances get updated. Your info was very
helpful.

A new problem with this work scheme for me is how to keep the "user's"
stencil updated, in sync.

When I modify a mastershape in the user's stencil, either by opening it
directly, editing, and saving, or by replacing it with the modified shape, I
found that the doc stencil recoginzes it as a different shape, even though
the shape is named the same in the user's stencil.

I guess the only way to avoid this problem is to abandon trying to update
the user's stencil while working on the file, and just concentrate on
mastershape modifications in the doc stencil. And when the file is final, I'd
create a fresh user's stencil from the shapes in the doc stencil, for use in
the next file.

4.Updating shape instances in page when stencil mastershape is modif

Hi,

I have:
 -custom mastershapes in a stencil
-numerous instances of these shapes in multiple pages of a .vsd file
(created by dropping the mastershape to the page)

When I make changes to the mastershape, am I supposed to be able to update
the instances to reflect the changes? If so, how?

I've searched Help but I can't find a description of how to do this.

BTW, I know these instances retain some sort of link info to the
mastershape, because when I try to ungroup the instance, Visio tells me it
will break the link.

TIA,

5.Instances doesn't get updated when the master stencil changes

Hi,

I am trying to create a stencil master shape in such way that when I change
the master, all instances also get updated according to the new master
shape.

At this point I have a master shape in a stencil and I have hundreds of
instances in different visio drawing based on the very same stencil. When I
change the master shape, I have to change all instances (several hundreds)
and this is such a pain.

How can I solve this problem?

Any help would be appreciated,
