In Visio 2000, when I drag box A into box B, A becomes connected to B as a subordinate. This has stopped working on two of my org charts. Why would that be? Is there another way to connect the two boxes? (I use multi-page files, with successive tabs/pages as notes, and sometimes other drawing types).
  • 5. Error (1) occurred during action XXX. Unexpected end of file
I have an organization chart built some time ago. When I drag a box A into another box B, I expect box A to become box B's subordinate. It does not. I tried to duplicate the box (Ctrl-drag) before dragging the duplicate into a parent-to-be box. I get the error message "Error (1) occurred during action Duplicate. Unexpected end of file." The box is not duplicated. I created a new page and tried to copy the whole org chart into the new page. I get the error message "Error (1) occurred during action Copy. Unexpected end of file." I open a second instance of the same file and try to drag the whole org chart from one page to another. I get the error message "Error (1) occurred during action Drop On Page. Unexpected end of file." Both pages have Organization Chart" set for File->PageSetup- >LayoutAndRouting->Routing->Style. Same thing happens when I create a new org chart from scratch and try to copy/drag the existing org chart to the new file. Why might this happen? Any workarounds? Thanks.

Set default line format

Looked everywhere and feeling dumber than a rock!

Can you set the default line formatting for corner rounding? I use the
second choice in my start up package.

I would like to set it to use this as the default when drawing a line.

Thanks in advanced!!

Hi Jack,

There's no Visio equivalent to the that Word users know and love.
However, you can get close.

When you start a new drawing, select NO shapes, then choose the line
rounding that you love - most easily with the Corner Rounding button on the
Format Shape toolbar.

Anything you draw after that will take this rounding. But shapes that you
drop on the page from stencils won't - they've been pre-formatted.

Your second option is to build a template (.vst) file that you use instead
of Blank Drawing. You can add styles to this drawing, set the rounding, open
the stencils that you use, add background pages, company logos, etc. to this
drawing so that your page is as-ready-to-go as possible. Then you can base
all your new drawings on this template.

Note, to get your template to show up in the File > New > Choose Drawing
Type screen, visit the template path settings located under: Tools > Options
 > Advanced > File paths button.

Hope this helps,

Couldnt get it to work.
I have Visio 2003 office is there something in options or customize I need
to have checked? I have a blank starter drawing. The tab's are cover, index
and background and I insert sheets as needed for electronic drawings( is the
insert sheet not taking on the rounding format?).

You 1st response did answer another probple I was working on though!

Thanks to you Chris you rattled my head and this seems to work:

open drawing and draw a "L" shaped line and keep it selected.
choose format-> define styles-> select lines set all the line properties you
want on startup then click ok
on the "define styles screen" click preserve local format on apply check box.

delete the line you made and save the file. The format was there when I
opened it up and tested line format (curve and weigh)

Thanks Chris for the brain rattle!

ay to go, Jack!

If you find yourself upgrading to Visio 2007, take note that the Define
Styles menu item gets buried. You have to check "Developer Mode" under Tools
> Options > Advanced tab to get it to show up(!)

2.How do you set the default line format?

3.Setting Default Formatting for a Connector

Does anyone know how to set a default format for connectors? For line
formatting I know that you are supposed to make sure you don't have a shape
selected, go to Format - Line, select the formatting you want and click
Apply...every line that you add to the drawing thereafter has the default
formatting that was selected. I would like to do the same thing for
connectors - I want a default format option so that when I add a connector to
my drawing it is auto-formatted w/an arrow endpoint.
