  • 1. Windows XP: Open file in read-only: Word, Excel, Visio
I'm often sharing files on a network drive with someone. Often, one of us knows that we don't need to open a file for modification, and we only need read-access. Is there a way to open a file in read-only mode so that when someone does need to open it for modification, the read-only user is not blocking that? If there is not a way to do this native to Windows XP, is there a way to do it from the three applications that we use most, namely Word, Excel, Visio? All are 2003 versions. Thx.
  • 2. Can SmartDraw files be easily converted into Visio?
I am a management consultant who uses SmartDraw to prepare flowcharts for clients. Many of these clients use Visio and would like to have a copy of the flowchart in Visio format. Is there a conversion tool that makes the conversion from SmartDraw to Visio format in a way that allows the flowchart to be updated later in Visio?
  • 3. Is Visio 2003 PRO compatible with other Office 2007 Modules
Help! Previously, I was using Office 2003 + Visio 2003 Pro + Project 2003 Pro installed in that order using Windows XP Pro O/S. Recently, I installed the Office 2007 modules using Windows XP Pro O/ S. The Office 2007 installation process UNINSTALLED both MS Visio 2003 Pro and MS Project 2003 Pro. (My first question is why since both Project and Visio were separately installed in my previous environment???) So I want to re-install Visio and Project 2003 to run alongside the Office 2007 modules since the cost to upgrade for a SOHO operation is prohibitive. Question; Can I re-install Visio and Project 2003 and are they compatible with the Office 2007 modules? Thanks for your feedback, Jim (AKA, LAjames)
  • 4. Creating a org chart
In my organisation, one supervisor controls several departments. Example, John manages Finance, Legal and Purchase departments. I want to generate separate org charts for each of the departments. When I use the Wizard, it gives me all of John's reportees together in one sheet without separating them by function. I have to then manually delete and create separate sheets for each department. My database is in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, with a separate field for department. How do I do this? Please help !! -- Ashutosh

How do you set the default line format?

Postby Z3didXJs » Sun, 17 Jul 2005 07:44:02 GMT

I have tried to set the default format for lines in my Visio, but it does not
work. I opened Visio Help and found that what I was doing was correct, but
yet it still doesn't work. Any clues?

If you have nothing selected when you change formatting properties in Visio,
you are editing the default format. The default format applies to geometric
primitives drawn using the Drawing Tools. The text format also applies to
text created by the Text Tool. The default format does not apply to the
Connector tool or to shapes dragged from a stencil.

4.Setting Default Formatting for a Connector

Does anyone know how to set a default format for connectors? For line
formatting I know that you are supposed to make sure you don't have a shape
selected, go to Format - Line, select the formatting you want and click
Apply...every line that you add to the drawing thereafter has the default
formatting that was selected. I would like to do the same thing for
connectors - I want a default format option so that when I add a connector to
my drawing it is auto-formatted w/an arrow endpoint.

5.Setting default formatting for connections

I know that default formatting (arrow heads, pattern, color) can be
set for lines drawn with the line tool -- by deselecting all, doing
Format->Line, and setting the desired parameters. However, this
formatting doesn't apply to connections created with the connection
tool. Can the default formatting for connections be set somehow in a
similar fashion?
