Visio crashes when exporting Org Chart to Excel

Postby tonyfleming1 » Wed, 09 Jan 2008 04:05:49 GMT

Hi

I have got Visio 2007 and have developed an Organisation Chart using
the standard template.
Whenever I try to export it to Excel, Visio crashes.

I *have* been to the Micosoft site and installed any updates/Service
Packs my laptop needed, but I'm not getting anywhere with this.

Can anyone help?

THanks
Tony

Try creating a new org chart and see if you get the crash when exporting
that to Excel. That will tell you if it's application-wide or just file
specific. If you get the crash in a new org chart then try starting Visio
in application safe mode by holding down the Ctrl key and starting Visio
until you get prompted Yes/No. If you still get the crash try repairing
Visio.

Also, check in the Event Viewer's Application Log in Control Panel >
Administrative Tools for any sources named Application Error or Office 12.
There should be the crash details (something with Visio.exe). If you could
post a reply with the crash details and the version/service pack of Excel
that would be helpful too.

Hi Aaron

Thanks for your post.

I have tried creating new org charts both in safe and "normal" mode
and I still get the same problem.
I have been into the event viewer. When Visio crashed, the last event
of type "Error" was as follows:

Faulting application visio.exe, version 12.0.6211.1000, stamp
46d4ae1d, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, stamp
411096b4, debug? 0, fault address 0x000431a0.

The associated event of type "Information" was:

Bucket 593640963, bucket table 1, faulting application visio.exe,
version 12.0.6211.1000, stamp 46d4ae1d, faulting module ntdll.dll,
version 5.1.2600.2180, stamp 411096b4, debug? 0, fault address
0x000431a0.

I have Excel 2003 SP3 and Visio 2007 SP1

Hope that helps!
Tony

See if it works on a different user. You can run Visio as a different user,
hold the shift key down, right-click on the Visio icon and choose Run As,
login with the other user's credentials. If you still get the crash, try
repairing Office 2003.

Hi and sorry for the delay. I would not have been able to run it as a
different user as it is my own laptop and is not used by others.
However, it looks like I have found out what the problem is! Here
goes:

Set up an organisation chart in Visio 2007

Select Organisation Chart > Export Organisation Data

When the window pops up requesting you to specify a location and name
for the file you're about to create, ensure that it will save the data
as an excel spreadsheet
Next type the name of the file you want to create. Here's the key bit
- ensure that the name you type ends in ".xls"!! Don't rely on Visio
to automatically append the suffix for you, even if you've specified
the filetype in advance.

If you type in the filename without the suffix - just as you would
anywhere else - it crashes with the error I described earlier. This
seems weird because, as I said I would rely on any MS package to cope
without needing to apply a suffix.

Hope that helps. Any chance that this will get fixed?

Tony

This seems to be machine or file specific. The steps you describe work on
the machines I can test with. Another possibility is that there is another
action in the repro steps that we aren't capturing.

I don't get this problem on my Vista box with Office 2007 SP1 and Visio Pro
2007 SP1, you shouldn't need to put a file extension after the filename, it
will add that for you. If it's not adding the ext. I'd run a repair on
Visio and Office and make sure you're on the latest service packs for both.

1.Export to Excel, then to Visio (Org Charts)

I am trying to export my database to into Visio so I can automatically create
org charts. I am having a problem with the names.

If I have a contact named John Smith, Outlook exports the name as SmithJohn
in the name field. That is what Visio keys off of (manager name) to figure

If I go in the file and manually change the name to John Smith, the org
