  • 2. VSS Admin user issue..
VSS version: 6.0 a Recently, I noticed that some users are logging into one of the VSS databases with "Admin" user login. Admin user for the vss database has a password and only VSS Admin is aware of the password. This is the scenario: Users login to a common PC (OS: windows XP pro or windows 2000 Pro), locally as Local Administrator (NT user name "Admin"). They launch vss client on that pc, connect to vss database and since se network name for automatic user log inis enabled users are automatically logged including the Admin user that has a password. Password prompt for Admin user is completely being bypassed. This could potentially cause many problems if users intentionally or unintentionally do anything (such as purges..) in the database. Also there would be no traceability for code changes (on who has made the changes). Is this a known bug in visual source safe? If so, is there a work around for this problem? -- RR
  • 3. Keyword Comments - NROFF file uses .\"
I have an NROFF file that is under source control and I want to use $History $ as we usually do. The problem is that the comment sequence for NROFF syntax is .\" and I've failed to set up the [Keyword Comments] in sourcesafe.ini for *.nr to generate the double-quote mark when it expands the line. Does anyone know how to do this? Many thanks if you do.... Regards, Andrew.
  • 4. Strange problem w/ automation object
I've written an automation object for a web app that controls the checking in and checking out of files from SourceSafe whenever a user does any modifications. Everything was working fine until I placed the calls to the SourceSafe object in another page. Now whenever the SourceSafe Database.Open is called the program just sits there and never returns from this call. Thinking I might have hosed up my SS install I reinstalled it removed any calls to the SS object from the new pages and just have the original pages that I developed with - still no luck, just hangs there. Downloaded the IVSS sample program and installed it and it's not working either. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks, Bill Youngman

We are trying to use SourceSafe to manage changes for Unix code. The SourceSafe Database is hosted on a Windows server, if we show the differences for a file that was just checked in it displays the last line as being different but no difference is seen. If I copy the file to a Windows system no difference is shown. I suspect the End-Of-File character is causing the difference. Is there any way to correct or work around this?

It might also be an end of line problem. Check out the Append_EOL and EOL
settings in the .ini file.

Hi all
we have recently started using VSS, is there any feature That could be used so as to deny write permission to some users from a group of users in the same enviornment? What exactly we do with the LOCK folde. What type of files are stored in it?To be more specific can we deny write permission to some users on individual files from different projects?

hi,
regarding setting permissions to deny write permission i think that is
possible from the visual source safe Admin part. You can make any user as
read only (select a user and check the read only checkbox), So in this way
that can be achieved and as far as file level rights is concerned i dont
think that can be done in source safe.
hope that answers your queries.
thanks n regards
Vishal

Can you see an end of file character in the file if you view it with a
binary editor or hex dump it to the screen?

I don't know of any setting for the end of line. What version and build of
VSS are you using?

You might need to contact Product Support if you're already running 6.0d:

If you've got 6.0a - 6.0c, this is an acknowledged bug. It's fixed in 6.0d.
This was a bug in previous versions that was fixed in 6.0, but it got broken
again in 6.0a. When we upgraded to 6.0d, we noticed it was fixed again.
