  • 1. Startup script question
I need to run a script on some XP machines and I need to get some utilities copied onto the machine to perform the task. I was going to copy the necessary files from a network share but giving 'domain computers' read access does not allow me to access the files. My ORIGINAL plan was to copy the files from where the startup script resides. However, using copy *.exe c:\temp causes the system to copy files from (apparently) the c:\windows folder. Is there an environment variable that I can use to refer to the path where the script is located ? Or is there some other / better way to get these files copied down ? Thanks

  • 3. Icon cache needs to be enlarged?
Someone in the MS Word discussion group suggested that enlarging the icon cache might solve this issue: After upgrading from the Office Professional Edition 2000 to Editon 2003, the MS icon is displayed instead of the Word icon for Word files. All other icons; Excel, Access, Publisher and PowerPoint display properly. I've run the "Detect and Repair" utility and the "Reregister" utility with no success. If you think enlarging the icon cache might help and know how to do that, please tell me how. Of course, if you've encountered this problem and found a remedy, please tell me how to make those icons reappear. Thanks for your help. Harry
  • 4. Changing permission recursively
Hi all, some days ago I asked about changing ownership and permission of files, after moving an HD on a different client. I was suggested to change the owner of the file(s) to administrator, then re-open properties and edit permission for administrator. It works fine (thanks folks) but I'd like to do this for many folders and subfolders at once. It seems not working. It seems when different file types are included, the multiple selection do not work for changing ownership. To change permission for all files and folders on the HD it'd become extremely time consuming. Can anybody suggest a better way, if exists? Thank you
  • 5. ntfs convert - insufficient memory
hey, i wanted to convert a 18GB fat32 partition to NTFS. So i did the convert command, but when my machine boots, it starts the chkdsk, and then it gives me the follwing error "insufficient memory". i have 256 MB RAM and 5 GB free space so this should be enough i think. Is there anything i'm missing? why this error? what should i check? Alternative question would be "how to stop making my machine want to convert every time it boots". I'll continue working on the fat32. thanx. Steven.

Server service missing.

Postby Alan Illeman » Sun, 30 Apr 2006 19:36:03 GMT

I had a software problem I couldn't solve (no access to CDROM
drive) and a tech installed a second hard drive, installed the
OS (Windows 2000 Pro SP4) copied over my data, and then ghosted
it all onto my drive.

Everthing is now ok, except "Server" isn't listed in Services
and have one Service I never had before: "Portable Media Serial
Number Service".

I presume that HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver
is 'Server'? It is not running, and I get the following error in
Event Viewer=>Application Log every time I log on...

Event Type: Error
Event Source: PerfNet
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2004
Date: 28/04/2006
Time: 7:30:46 PM
User: N/A
Computer: JOHN
Description:
Unable to open the Server service. Server performance data will not
be returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0.
Data:
0000: 34 00 00 c0 4..

How do I start 'Server'?

TIA
Alan

I don't think that there is a Server Service on Stand Alone Windows 2000
installation unless you install File and Printer Sharing. If you don't
intend on sharing files or printer I recommend that you NOT install the
service. The error you are getting is caused by something else, maybe
Symantec software? See if anything here can help:

You can run exctrlst.exe (Extensible Counter Listing Tool) from the resource
kit and disable the counters if you don't need or use them. They're for use
with Performance Monitor

Thanks John. I installed File & Printer Sharing and Server has appeared
and no further errors in Event Viewer. I've now unchecked Client for
Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing, leaving me just
PPP over Ethernet and Internet Protocol(TCP/IP). I'm presuming that
these two unchecked items are now inactive even though they're still
installed.

Thanks also to Dave Patrick.

Yes unchecking them unbinds them from that specific connection so the
protocol/service cannot be used by that connection.

I just upgraded one of my servers from Windows NT 4.0 sp6
